Column: Paper Pragmatism as Aussie Candy Bars Switch to Fiber-Based Packs

We’ve been keeping an eye on a localized spate of big confectionery brands in Australia swapping out traditional mixed-plastic flow-wrap film for what they say is curbside recyclable paper-based material. Mars Wrigley Australia’s new pack film format consists of 86% sustainably sourced FSC-certified paper, plus a thin (enough) plastic liner as a barrier layer. Not to be outdone, Nestlé Oceania’s KitKat is trialing a paper-based material using an on-pack QR code to invite consumer feedback on disposal habits for the curbside recyclable pack.

BASF welcomes reclassification of recyclability of coextruded polyethylene/polyamide film structures

“We appreciate the decision of the Stiftung Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister,” said Dr. Rolf-Egbert Grützner, Senior Manager Technical Support for Ultramid® extrusion polyamides at BASF. “"It was time to correct the categorization of polyamide 6 and also the related PA6/6.6 co-polyamides and put them on a solid updated basis.”

As early as June 2021, the independent testing and certification facility cyclos-HTP systematically examined and confirmed the recyclability of PE/PA multilayer films on behalf of BASF.

Swiss Chalet Partners with WestRock to Launch Recyclable Paperboard Packaging Throughout Restaurant Chain in Canada

WestRock Company, a leading provider of differentiated paper and packaging solutions, has announced a partnership with Recipe Unlimited to implement a suite of recyclable paperboard packaging, intended to divert 31 million plastic containers from landfills across Canada each year. The packaging began appearing at Swiss Chalet restaurants in October, 2021 and is now available across all its locations.

Coors Light Ditching Plastic Rings from Packaging, Saving 1.7 Million Pounds of Annual Waste

Coors Light is making a big change for the environment.

On Tuesday, the beer brand announced it would be eliminating plastic rings from its packaging globally, transitioning to fully recyclable and sustainably sourced cardboard-wrap carriers later this year.

It's not the first time Coors has been on the cutting edge of change. In 1959, the adult beverage giant notably debuted the two-piece recyclable aluminum can, revolutionizing the beverage industry in the process.
