Campbell Soup Co. is putting a new spin on its iconic can with the launch of Campbell’s soup-scented candles, which pay homage to the company’s branding, packaging design, and labeling. The candles launched on January 12, 2022.

Partnering with CAMP, The Family Experience Co., Campbell created the limited-edition candles in two “flavors” — (1) Tomato Soup & Grilled Cheese and (2) Chicken Noodle Soup. The former smells like roasted tomatoes, peppercorns, and grilled cheese, and the latter tempts with the scent of chicken, cloves, and buttery crackers.

As part of the project "Development of natural bioaromas to increase the shelf life of fresh food and reduce food waste," which was led by a team from the Department of Analytical Chemistry, Nutrition and Food Sciences at the University of Alicante, the researchers developed the new material from the core and rind of pineapples.

According to its developers, the material features active natural compounds with antioxidant capacity that can both be transformed into packaging containers and help to preserve the food held within those containers, thereby increasing its shelf life.

In many European countries, resealable flow packs have been a preferred packaging concept for sliced meat, sausage and cheese products for many years. In Germany as well, the relevance of flow packs is steadily growing in many fields of application. This includes the packaging of salad, baked goods, cereal, snacks, sausages, frozen fish and shellfish – and most recently, even ground meat. Consumers respond positively to the material-efficient and lightweight bags, which is why many manufacturers and packers are considering this packaging concept more and more as an alternative.

Bits of plastic dust have been floating around our environment for as long as humans have been using plastic, but scientists have only recently started investigating how these particles may affect our health. Microplastics are by definition smaller than a pencil eraser, so humans and animals may inhale or ingest them without knowing.

Past studies have identified microplastics in human stool and autopsy samples, but this is the first time scientists have discovered plastic particles lodged in the lungs of living patients.

Bacteria-shredding insect wings inspire new antibacterial packaging

Key points:

  • Antibacterial texturing kills bacteria, extending food’s shelf life.
  • Comes amid huge demand to improve the lifespan of food products, particularly for export.
  • Texture can be scaled up for mass production.

The lab-made nanotexture from an Australian-Japanese team of scientists kills up to 70% of bacteria and retains its effectiveness when transferred to plastic.

More than 30% of food produced for human consumption becomes waste, with entire shipments rejected if bacterial growth is detected.

PVC was one of the first polymers used in food packaging. It replaced many traditional materials such as glass as well as various forms of card and paper due to its qualities of being lightweight, shatter-resistant, organoleptic, cost-efficient, effective barrier, printable on, easily moldable and transparent.

Indonesia is the world's second-largest contributor to plastic waste in the ocean. Seventy percent of the plastic waste comes from single-use food and beverage plastic containers. Evoware makes a food packaging plastic replacement which is preservative-free and made from chemical-free farmed seaweed. People can eat the food packaging and take advantage of its nutritious seaweed which contains high fiber, vitamins and minerals. Evoware’s products are free from pork, alcohol and certain other ingredients which make them Halal certified and fit for Muslims to eat.

The coalition of physicians, scientists, and public health and environmental organizations is calling on the agency to rescind its approvals for BPA in adhesives and coatings and set strict limits on its use in food-contact plastics. They warn the new safe level for BPA ‒ based on recent scientific evidence ‒ is more than 5,000 times below what FDA says is safe for most Americans.
