UPM x Royal Vaassen: Fibre-Based Packaging for a Circular Future

As the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) approaches, the packaging industry is under increasing pressure to deliver recyclable solutions that are compatible with existing infrastructures. Rising to this challenge, UPM Specialty Papers and Royal Vaassen have joined forces to develop a new generation of fibre-based, recyclable barrier papers a sustainable alternative to plastic and aluminum laminates.

The collaboration has resulted in the Barryrwrap concept, a portfolio of food-safe barrier solutions tailored for applications ranging from medium to the most demanding performance requirements. These innovative materials offer high protection against moisture, oxygen, and light, ensuring both product safety and shelf-life while meeting recyclability standards.

“Our barrier papers are a sustainable alternative to laminates and plastics. They deliver strong protection with a focus on performance and circularity, while running smoothly on existing production lines for products like coffee, powders, and stock,” says Mark Gerritsen, Sales Manager at Royal Vaassen.

At the top of the range, Barryrwrap Everest has been specifically designed for instant coffee and other dry products requiring maximum protection. With its fully recyclable paper structure, it provides a circular alternative to aluminum laminates without compromising on quality, barrier performance, or processability.

The strength of Barryrwrap lies in its foundation: UPM Solide™ Lucent. Known for its exceptional density, smoothness, and strength, this packaging paper ensures efficiency even on high-speed lines, while minimizing coating requirements. It is also highly versatile, easily converted into different packaging structures, including canister formats for chips and drink powders.

“UPM Solide™ Lucent offers the perfect base for Barryrwrap. It’s exceptionally strong, smooth, and dense making it easy to convert into advanced recyclable solutions,” adds Mika Uusikartano, Senior Manager, Product Portfolio Management, UPM Specialty Papers.

With recyclability verified under CEPI/4EG and PTS standards, and applications already tested in new packaging formats, the UPM–Royal Vaassen partnership is proof that co-creation can drive meaningful change in packaging. By offering fibre-based, recyclable, and food-safe solutions, they are not just preparing for tomorrow’s regulations but shaping a more sustainable future for everyday packaging.
