EU lifts ban on export of waste paper to India

The European Union (EU) has lifted its ban on exports of waste paper to India from April 1, providing relief to the paper industry affected by the raw material shortage.

Waste cuttings or papers are one of the important raw materials for the paper industry, particularly for manufacturing kraft paper which in turn is used for making brown or corrugated boxes used for packing all items from FMCG to electronics.

The EU had banned the exports of these cuttings in November last year. When India raised the issue, the officials there attributed it to a clerical error.

The recycling hubs at Sam’s Club in Fayetteville and Walmart on Elm Springs Road in Springdale are now accepting pet food packaging, which is not recyclable through local curbside programs.

Pet food packaging is an often overlooked waste stream because it usually consists of multiple materials, like aluminum and plastic, which excludes it from curbside recycling, said Tom Szaky, founder and CEO of TerraCycle.

With a Covid-inspired surge in home deliveries and wasteful packaging over the past year, electronics firm Samsung chose to launch an eco-friendly home renovation project ahead of the United Nations’ World Environment Day.

Released on June 4, the campaign was devised by Edelman, which was instructed to find a way people could rethink how to reuse their packaging waste. The result was a 30-second campaign with Amsterdam-based paper artist AJ Smith, known as Papersmith, who explored the creative reuse of Samsung’s Eco-Packaging.

The change has the potential to increase the availability of vaccines in smaller, more rural areas and decrease the number of wasted doses.

So far, the Pfizer vaccine has been available in two packages: one with 450 doses and another with 1,170. But the vaccine's cold storage requirement limits where and for how long they can be kept, making it challenging for smaller facilities to store high quantities of the vaccine without wasting doses.

The analyses carried out by the Waste Watcher International Observatory revealed that food waste was still a relevant issue in 2020, although it did drop progressively. It is estimated that approximated 27 kg of food per person currently go to waste, i.e. almost 12% less than during the previous year. What is more, the analyses carried out in collaboration with Conai have shown that consumers choose packaging to waste less.
