Building on the success of its 2024 single-use plastic ban, Kashi Vishwanath Dham is taking a bold step towards a fully sustainable future. Starting August 10, immediately after the conclusion of the holy month of Shravan, the temple authorities will implement a total ban on all plastic items within the temple premises.
This includes commonly used plastic containers for offerings such as milk, garlands, and other packaging materials, which will no longer be permitted inside the sacred complex.
Vishwa Bhushan Mishra, CEO of the temple trust, confirmed the decision after a high-level stakeholder meeting focused on making the shrine 100% plastic-free. The initiative follows the positive results of the December 2024 Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham Special Area Development Board resolution, which successfully eliminated single-use plastic at the site.
However, despite ongoing awareness efforts, many devotees continue to bring offerings in plastic packaging. In response, the authorities have chosen to extend the ban to all plastic materials, including pitchers, containers, and retail packaging.
During Shravan (July 11 – August 9), the temple will launch a focused awareness campaign across media and social platforms to educate visitors. From August 10, strict enforcement will ensure that no plastic—under any circumstances—will be allowed within the dham.
This move reflects the temple’s unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility and serves as a model for spiritual spaces nationwide aiming to transition towards eco-conscious practices.'
