In a landmark move toward sustainable packaging, Scanfill and Sulapac have teamed up to revolutionize thermoforming with an eco-conscious material that doesn’t compromise on performance. Their latest launch Degrafoil Flow 1.7 brings compostability, durability, and plastic-like functionality together in one seamless solution, redefining what’s possible in European packaging production.
Developed from Sulapac’s Flow 1.7 wood-composite a bio-based, industrially compostable material the new foil offers a direct replacement for traditional plastic sheets used in thermoforming. It’s a bold leap for brands looking to phase out fossil-based plastics without disrupting their current manufacturing processes.
“With Degrafoil Flow 1.7, our clients can meet growing demands for sustainability and lower carbon footprints while continuing business as usual,” says Karl Banke, Sustainability Specialist at Scanfill.
Unlike many bio-based materials that fall short on processing reliability or durability, Flow 1.7 delivers. It runs smoothly on standard thermoforming lines, resists scratches, and maintains consistent quality. Its soft, fibrous texture and deep color customization open up aesthetic options previously limited to oil-based plastics but with a reduced environmental impact.
“We’ve long sought a compostable alternative, and only Sulapac could match the performance we needed,” Banke adds.
The material isn’t just functional; it’s designed to feel premium. With a natural matte finish and tactile warmth, Flow 1.7 enhances the sensory experience for end users ideal for applications where sustainability is part of the brand story.
Produced at Scanfill’s food grade facility in southern Sweden, Degrafoil Flow 1.7 is already making its way into real-world packaging solutions across Europe. Its introduction marks a pivotal moment in packaging’s green transition and a model for industry-wide transformation.
“Sulapac’s mission is to make sustainability an easy choice,” says Juho Luukkanen, Sales Director at Sulapac. “Partnering with Scanfill gives us the reach and impact to turn that goal into action.”
As consumer pressure mounts and regulations tighten, the packaging industry’s future will be written by innovations like this ones that blend environmental responsibility with industrial practicality.
