• Beverage can laser coding

Up until recently, the coding of these aluminium cans has been done with ink. However, ink is not an optimal coding system due to the environment in which it is produced which can affect its readability and adhesion. For that reason, it is common to find duplicate coding on the cans, which go through two coding systems in line, increasing operational costs. The optimal alternative to this coding is the use of fiber lasers. This is where the radiation (with a wavelength of 1064 nanometres) generates an engraving reaction in the aluminium which, although it does not generate a colour change, does produce excellent visibility as well as ensuring an effective, reliable and sustainable coding system without the use of inks. As the production rates are so high and a large number of characters must be encoded, the best solution is to use ultra high speed (UHS) and high-power equipment, such as Macsa ID’s SPA F-9050 UHS. The 100×100 mm lens used, provides a compromise between the energy density needed to generate a durable mark and the depth of focus needed to work on the curved bottom of the can without losing coding capability. The characteristics of this system mean that it is possible to code up to 120,000 cans per hour, increasing the production rate without having to duplicate the coding system, making it an optimal solution also from a cost point of view. Technical information about beverage can laser coding Laser: F-9050-UHS Lens: 100×100 mm. • Traceability in the production process

Types of traceability Four different types/stages can be distinguished in the life of a product, depending on the type of business or product to be traced: Raw materials: identification of the components that make up the product Production/verification: until we get our final product Packing/Aggregation: from the completed unit through to its final packaging Logistics: from shipment to the end user Shall we define traceability? Traceability is the ability to retrieve the full history or location of an item or product by means of recorded identification. All in all, to register all the information of a product, such as manufacturers, suppliers, distributors. This information is tracked in all processes, from raw material allocation, processing, handling, assembly to distribution and sale. Types of traceability Four different types/stages can be distinguished in the life of a product, depending on the type of business or product to be traced: Raw materials: identification of the components that make up the product Production/verification: until we get our final product Packing/Aggregation: from the completed unit through to its final packaging Logistics: from shipment to the end user traceability Traceability in the production process This is also called internal traceability, and is the most important of those previously mentioned when it comes to the creation or transformation of a product. Thanks to this information, it is possible to retrieve the complete historical record of a product through its internal processes, including its handling, its composition, the machinery used, its schedule, its temperature, its batch, etc. In other words, all the indicators that make or may make the product stand out for the end user. The aim is to be able to record information from each stage of production. The production/assembly/transformation phases may vary, but in all of them we can store the following information: Operator Start time Duration Assembled components (supplier/batch) Verification test Machine code Incidents This process involves marking the individual product with a unique code, which we call serialization, and identifying it in each of the production processes. Throughout the manufacturing process of the product or item it may also be necessary to add different raw materials in order to complete it, and consequently these must be identified and correctly coded in order to be registered. All this data can be entered manually or automatically, depending on the production line. Benefits of internal traceability A well-executed traceability system in the production process brings great benefits, such as Optimization in the supply chain, meaning more efficient management in logistics. Increased productivity, as it is possible to know the output per machine, time per phase / stage / product. Complaint and recall management, meaning that possibly defective items can be located Prevents counterfeiting A better service to the end user

In addition, the Board of Directors of HUL today approved HUL acquiring the Horlicks Brand for India from GSK for a consideration of Euro 375.6 mln (INR 3045 Cr), exercising the option available in the original agreement made between Unilever and GSK. This will enable HUL to utilize cash on its balance sheet and create value for shareholders. In addition, it will enable HUL to drive better salience in a local context. The other brands which were under the ownership of GSKCH like Boost, Maltova and Viva come to HUL’s brand portfolio by virtue of the merger. A unique opportunity to acquire the No 1 Health Food Drinks (HFD) portfolio in the largest HFD market globally The merger is in line with HUL’s strategy to build a sustainable and profitable Foods and Refreshment (F&R) business in India by leveraging the megatrend of health and wellness. GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Limited is the undisputed leader in the HFD category, with iconic brands such as Horlicks and Boost, and a product portfolio supported by strong nutritional claims. This merger will bolster HUL’s focus to build a profitable and sustainable Nutrition business in India. As shared earlier, HUL will be partnering with GSK (via a consignment selling arrangement) to distribute brands of the GSK Consumer Healthcare family in India. This partnership, with world class brands from GSK (like Eno, Crocin, Sensodyne etc.) and HUL’s distribution strength can unlock value for GSK and build further Hindustan Unilever’s go-to-market capabilities.
