Huskee’s reusable cup system, Borrow, is now the default for coffee at Carriageworks Farmers Market, replacing single-use takeaway cups across three Sydney vendors.

From 21 March, Single O, Reuben Hills and Colombian Connection Coffee serve all 8oz and 12oz hot drinks in Borrow cups. Customers return cups to one of two smart Borrow Bins at each end of the market. The cups are collected and washed at Huskee’s St Peters WashHub before returning to circulation. Around 1,500 cups rotate across the three vendors, diverting thousands of single-use cups from landfill each market day.

PepsiCo, Ferrero and Mondelēz International are among the contributors to HolyGrail 2030’s latest project, which will test the intelligent sorting and recycling of polypropylene snack packets into new food packaging.

Food packaging costs are rising because of the war in Iran, said Christopher Mejía Argueta, a research scientist at the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics. Most processed foods are packaged in plastics derived from oil.

Just as oil price increases have put up prices for gasoline, diesel and fertilizer, they will certainly impact food packaging.

Argueta said there are alternatives such as glass, reusables and recycling, but none of those are easy or cheap alternatives.

Currently, containers used in consumer packaged goods are mostly made of plastic, while some premium brands use aluminum or glass.
