Pregis Expands EVOH Barrier Film Production at Anderson Facility to Meet Sustainable Packaging Demand

Pregis, a leading global manufacturer of protective packaging, is expanding its blown film operations at its Anderson, South Carolina facility to increase production of ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) barrier films. This strategic move aims to meet the growing demand for sustainable, high-performance packaging solutions in the food and consumer packaged goods (CPG) sectors.

The expansion will bolster Pregis' ability to scale its Pregis Renew™ Series, particularly the B-Series high-barrier polyethylene sealant film. This EVOH-based solution serves as a critical replacement for traditional metallized or polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) films, offering an all-polyethylene, mono-material flexible packaging structure that enhances recyclability and reduces environmental impact.

"As brands seek packaging that delivers both barrier properties and recyclability, Pregis is investing in the infrastructure needed to stay ahead of that demand," said Bob Gargione, President of Pregis Performance Flexibles. "This capacity expansion ensures our ability to support customers with high-quality, high-barrier structures that meet today’s performance standards while enabling store drop-off recyclability."

The films produced on the new lines are engineered to run efficiently on a versatile mix of form, fill, and seal equipment, reducing operational downtime and minimizing leaks. EVOH, a copolymer used in multi-layer films, provides excellent protection against oxygen, moisture, and grease, thereby extending shelf life and supporting improved recyclability in mono-material packaging formats.

Pregis' Anderson facility, a 168,000 square foot plant, represents an $80 million investment and is considered one of the most technologically advanced extrusion facilities in North America. The site features multiple newly-installed lines producing the latest engineered films and includes a world-class film laboratory to develop and test materials.

This expansion aligns with Pregis' commitment to sustainability and its 2K30 environmental goals, which focus on improving carbon footprint, reducing environmental impact, and making significant positive contributions to society. By increasing the production of recyclable EVOH barrier films, Pregis is taking a significant step toward a more sustainable future in packaging.
