Aldi and Arla Roll Out Invisible UV Tags on Milk Packaging to Improve Recycling Transparency

Leading UK retailer Aldi and dairy cooperative Arla have partnered with recycling technology company Polytag to introduce invisible UV tags across their milk bottle packaging. The initiative is designed to improve the tracking and measurement of plastic packaging throughout the recycling process, supporting greater transparency and data-driven sustainability.

The ultraviolet (UV) tags, which are invisible to consumers, are printed directly onto milk bottle labels. When the packaging passes through participating recycling facilities equipped with Polytag's detection technology, the tags are identified and recorded, providing accurate information on where, when, and how much packaging is being recycled.

The technology enables brands and retailers to gain real-time insights into the journey of their packaging after consumer use. By collecting verified recycling data, companies can better evaluate recycling performance, improve packaging design decisions, and support compliance with evolving Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements and circular economy goals.

For Aldi and Arla, the initiative represents another step toward increasing packaging sustainability while helping create a more transparent and accountable recycling system. Rather than relying on estimated recycling rates, the UV tagging solution offers measurable evidence of packaging recovery and material flow through the waste management infrastructure.

Why It Matters for the Packaging Industry

The adoption of digital identification technologies such as UV watermarking is gaining momentum as brands seek smarter ways to measure the real-world performance of their packaging. Reliable recycling data can help improve material recovery, optimize packaging formats, and support regulatory reporting while strengthening circular packaging strategies.

Invisible digital markers are emerging as a powerful tool for the packaging value chain. Beyond enhancing recycling traceability, they provide brands with actionable insights into packaging lifecycles, enabling data-backed sustainability decisions. As regulations around packaging waste continue to tighten, technologies like UV tagging are expected to play an increasingly important role in creating a transparent and circular packaging ecosystem.
