Graphic Packaging International has once again pushed the boundaries of sustainable packaging with the launch of PaperSeal® Pressed, a remarkable addition to its award-winning PaperSeal® tray portfolio. This innovation not only enhances performance for modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) applications but also makes eco-friendly packaging more accessible in high-volume, price-sensitive markets like fresh meat and poultry.
The real game-changer here? PaperSeal Pressed slashes plastic content by nearly 85% compared to traditional trays. Crafted primarily from FSC®-certified paperboard, the tray is both recyclable and renewable, offering a genuine alternative to conventional plastic without sacrificing functionality.
For years, one of the biggest hurdles for pressed paperboard trays was micro-leakage an issue that prevented them from achieving the same shelf-life as plastic. Graphic Packaging’s engineering team has solved this long-standing challenge by combining a high-barrier liner applied after tray forming with a secure hermetic seal. The result: a pressed tray that delivers shelf-life performance on par with plastic trays while remaining far more sustainable.
“Our engineers have solved what was previously considered an impossible challenge, creating an effective hermetic seal on a pressed paperboard tray,” said Tom Garsed, General Manager, Tray & Cup Solutions, International at Graphic Packaging. “PaperSeal Pressed opens the door for brands to finally replace plastic trays in categories where cost and performance once held them back.”
Beyond sustainability, the new solution is designed for efficiency. PaperSeal Pressed is fully compatible with existing tray sealing equipment, eliminating the need for costly production changes. It also provides a generous printable surface inside and out offering brands a chance to maximize shelf impact without relying on extra labels or sleeves.
This launch builds on the success of PaperSeal Original and PaperSeal Shape, completing a portfolio that now supports a full range of fresh protein products, from entry-level to premium lines. With PaperSeal Pressed, brands and retailers can transition entire ranges away from plastic while still delivering reliable packaging, consumer convenience, and strong branding opportunities.
Graphic Packaging’s new tray is more than just packaging; it’s a statement of circular design in action combining renewable materials, operational efficiency, and consumer appeal in one transformative solution.
