Bottle Up and Braskem Advance Sustainable Packaging with Bio-Based Water Bottles !

As global concern over plastic waste and climate change continues to grow, companies across the packaging value chain are accelerating the transition toward renewable and lower-carbon materials. One such example is the collaboration between Bottle Up and Braskem, combining reusable packaging design with bio-based polymer innovation to create more sustainable water bottle solutions.

Founded in the Netherlands, Bottle Up was created in response to the growing problem of single-use plastic waste, particularly the large number of discarded bottles found in Amsterdam’s canals. The company developed a durable and refillable water bottle designed to offer the same convenience as traditional disposable bottles while encouraging long-term reuse.

However, Bottle Up’s sustainability strategy extends beyond reducing plastic waste. By incorporating Braskem’s I’m green™ bio-based polyethylene, produced from renewable sugarcane-based ethanol, the company is also working to reduce the carbon footprint of its packaging solutions.

Combining Reusability with Renewable Materials

Unlike conventional fossil-based plastics, Braskem’s I’m green™ bio-based resin is manufactured using sugarcane, a renewable feedstock capable of capturing carbon dioxide during cultivation. This enables the material to contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions across the product lifecycle while maintaining the performance characteristics required for durable consumer packaging.

“At Bottle Up, we deeply care about reducing waste, but we don’t stop there,” said Andrew Eversden, Co-Founder of Bottle Up.

“We are passionate about using materials that are good for the planet. I’m green™ bio-based is made from sugarcane, which captures carbon from the atmosphere. When consumers choose Bottle Up, they are not only selecting a reusable product but also supporting climate-conscious innovation.”

Bottle Up also highlighted the importance of responsible sourcing and selected Braskem due to its sustainable ethanol sourcing program and focus on environmental and social responsibility within the supply chain.

Supporting the Shift Toward Circular and Low-Carbon Packaging

For Braskem, partnerships such as Bottle Up align with its broader innovation and sustainability strategy focused on advancing renewable and circular material solutions for the packaging industry. The company continues to invest in bio-based polymers, recycling technologies and circular economy initiatives aimed at reducing reliance on fossil resources and lowering carbon emissions. ()

“It is always a pleasure to partner with companies like Bottle Up,” said Richard Lambert, Business Development & Partnerships for Bio-Polymers EMEA at Braskem.

“Their dedication to eliminating plastic pollution and creating a more sustainable future is inspiring, and we are proud to support their sustainability goals through I’m green™ bio-based materials.”

As consumer demand for reusable and renewable packaging solutions continues to increase, collaborations such as Bottle Up and Braskem demonstrate how material innovation and sustainable product design can work together to address both waste reduction and climate impact across the packaging industry.
