Bio-based PLA films for fresh herbs and flowers

Whether fresh cut flowers, potted herbs or cut herbs: horticultural products must not only be optimally protected at the point of sale, but also presented attractively. With Planova, Südpack offers a bio-based and biodegradable PLA film solution that is highly transparent, breathable, and stable, and is particularly suitable for the production of conically shaped packaging.

Planova is a PLA film produced from renewable raw materials such as sugarcane and corn starch. It is characterised by its high transparency and breathability, making it ideal for use with fresh produce. The film is also dimensionally stable, which makes it particularly suitable for the production of tapered packaging, known as Conical Sleeves. This form of packaging is widely used in horticulture as it allows for an attractive presentation of products. Under industrial conditions, PLA is also compostable.

Protects, presents and keeps fresh
The thin yet stable Planova film ensures reliable grip and transport protection for fresh products. Delicate blossoms, stems, and herbs are protected from breakage and damage, while the high transparency and brilliant sheen allow for a clear view of the product's freshness, quality, and colour. 

Another advantage lies in the material properties of PLA: Due to their molecular structure, Planova films are gas-permeable and do not require micro-perforation, unlike many other plastics. This allows them to wick away moisture and enable good air circulation, which effectively prevents rot and keeps sensitive products fresh for longer. Unlike paper, the material does not become soggy in a bucket of water or when watered, thus fully preserving its protective function and appearance.

Planova films are available in thicknesses from 15 to 100 µm and widths from 200 to 2,300 mm. For conical sleeves in horticulture and floristry, a 25 µm thin variant is used, among others, which offers high stability despite its low material thickness. Furthermore, the films are easy to print, allowing for individual designs – for example, for brand appearances, variety labelling or consumer information.
