ProAmpac Commercializes Active Packaging Film to Combat Moisture in Sensitive Products !

ProAmpac has announced the successful commercialization of ProActive Intelligence® Moisture Protect MP-1000, an active packaging technology designed to address moisture-related product degradation in food, health and wellness applications.

Developed in collaboration with Ozzi, a brand specializing in stick-pack formats for sensitive powdered products, the new technology aims to actively manage residual moisture inside the package while maintaining strong barrier performance.

Active Moisture Protection Built into the Packaging

Moisture remains one of the most significant challenges for sensitive products, particularly powders and formulations where excess humidity can affect taste, aroma, quality and shelf life.

The Moisture Protect MP-1000 series incorporates Aptar CSP Technologies' 3-Phase Activ-Polymer™ technology, enabling the packaging film to actively adsorb residual moisture from the package headspace.

Unlike conventional packaging systems that may rely on separate desiccant packets, the technology integrates moisture-management functionality directly into the packaging material.

This approach allows the package to move beyond its traditional role as a passive barrier and instead become an active component in protecting product quality.

“Moisture Protect MP-1000 demonstrates how active packaging can move beyond protection to actively enable product performance,” said Bob Flaherty, Vice President of Product Development at ProAmpac.

According to Flaherty, the collaboration with Ozzi demonstrates how material science can be applied to solve practical product-performance challenges while improving outcomes for both brands and consumers.

Solving a Critical Challenge for Stick-Pack Products

Ozzi partnered with ProAmpac to address taste and odour issues caused by excess moisture trapped inside its stick packs.

Traditional packaging solutions were unable to maintain sufficiently dry conditions within the package, which affected product quality and shelf life.

By adopting the MP-1000 packaging technology, Ozzi was able to actively manage residual moisture inside the pack, helping protect flavour, reduce unwanted odours and maintain overall product quality.

“MP-1000 allowed us to solve a critical product performance issue while simplifying our packaging system,” said Brandon Kuipers, Founder of Ozzi.

“By removing residual moisture at the source, we were able to protect flavour without compromising efficiency or adding complexity to our operation.”

Eliminating the Need for Loose Desiccants

One of the key advantages of the MP-1000 technology is its potential to eliminate the need for traditional loose desiccant packets.

By incorporating active moisture adsorption directly into the packaging film, brands may be able to simplify their packaging systems while reducing the number of additional components required inside the pack.

The technology is also designed to integrate with existing packaging lines, helping manufacturers adopt enhanced moisture protection without significant additional operational complexity.

Potential benefits include:

  • Improved protection against moisture-driven degradation
  • Better preservation of flavour and product quality
  • Reduced risk of unwanted odours
  • Extended shelf life for moisture-sensitive products
  • Elimination of separate loose desiccant packets
  • Reduced packaging complexity and potential waste
  • Integration with existing packaging operations

A Step Forward for Active Packaging

The commercialization of Moisture Protect MP-1000 highlights the growing role of active packaging in solving challenges that conventional barrier materials alone may not fully address.

Rather than simply preventing external moisture from entering the package, active packaging technologies can help manage the internal environment of the pack itself.

For moisture-sensitive food, health and wellness products, this could open new opportunities to improve product stability and shelf life while simplifying the overall packaging system.

As brands continue to demand packaging that delivers more than containment and protection, technologies such as ProActive Intelligence® Moisture Protect MP-1000 demonstrate how material science is transforming packaging into an active contributor to product performance.

The future of packaging may not simply be about creating a better barrier—it may be about creating packaging that actively works to protect what is inside.
