Minneapolis-based AWT Labels & Packaging (AWT), a provider of specialty labels and packaging for the healthcare, food and beverage, personal care, and industrial durable end markets, has announced the acquisition of Labeltronix.

Labeltronix represents the second acquisition by AWT in recent months, following the January acquisition of MacArthur Corporation, a manufacturer of custom engineered industrial and durable label solutions with headquarters in Grand Blanc, MI, and operations in Michigan, Poland, and China.

EMD Serono, the healthcare business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany in the U.S. and Canada, announced the launch of its new Slim Pack fertility medication packaging, reduced in size for convenience and environmental impact.

Mondi , global leader in Packaging & Paper , has reated a fully recyclable packaging solution for Warmhaus , a turkish proudcuer of Radiators & Boilers for Home Heating.

The new Monocorr box made of 10% recyclable corrugated board, inculding the inserts that cushion the packaged products.Previusly warmhaus used EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) foam inserts, which have low recycling rates and usually end in landfill or incineration facilites after use.

After creating a range of innovative compostable packaging for Bird & Blend’s selection of single-serve tea bags in 2021, Parkside has been working closely with the brand to extend the sustainable packaging solution across the company’s range of larger loose tea pouches and pyramid teabags.

Taking forward the clarion call given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to eliminate single-use plastics, the environment ministry has notified comprehensive guidelines on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) on plastic packaging, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said on Thursday.

Announcing the notification of the new Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2022 through social media late Thursday night, Yadav said the guidelines provide a framework to strengthen the circular economy of plastic packaging waste and promote alternatives to plastic.

Tetra Pak, in partnership with Elvir, a subsidiary of Savencia Fromage & Dairy - a world leading milk processor - has become the first carton packaging player in the food and beverage industry to launch a cap using certified recycled polymers.

This move marks a key step in both companies’ progress towards circularity. By helping to find an economically sound use for plastic waste and responsibly sourcing raw materials, Tetra Pak and Elvir continue to minimise their dependency on virgin, fossil-based resources.

The consumer goods giant reported its full year results with an underlying sales growth of 4.5% to €52.4bn; it is Unilever’s fastest underlying sales growth for nine years.

In a statement the company said: “We currently expect very high input cost inflation in the first half of over €2 billion. This may moderate in the second half to around €1.5 billion, although there is currently a wide range for this that reflects market uncertainty on the outlook for commodity, freight and packaging costs.”

“With the drive towards simplified packaging formats, and the need to develop mono material structures, Innovia Films developed this cast polypropylene film to act as an inner sealing layer. This low-temperature sealing film when laminated to other polypropylene films, such as BOPP film with improved thermal resistance and shrinkage properties, creates an ideal structure for pouches. In the UK, this structure would be recognised by OPRL as fully recyclable.”

Currently, the coatings are focused on flowers and fruits with inedible skins, however, the companies are investigating opportunities for edible coatings on other fruits and vegetables.

Consumers today expect retailers to minimize food waste by exploring alternatives to plastic packaging which is what inspired the two companies to devise an environmentally-friendly coating. 

The coating sets an alternative in motion that could improve on waste volumes in the value chain.
