Global chemical leader SABIC is presenting its latest portfolio of medical-grade thermoplastics at MD&M West 2026 (Booth #3251), highlighting solutions designed to address evolving performance, regulatory, and manufacturing challenges in healthcare devices. The showcased specialty materials support applications across drug delivery, patient diagnostics, and surgical technologies.
New Polycarbonate Copolymers and Biocompatible PEI Resins
At the event, SABIC is introducing a new family of polycarbonate (PC) copolymers certified under UL746G, alongside newly developed SILTEM™ HU resins. These biocompatible materials are engineered as potential replacements for fluoropolymers in select medical tubing applications, supporting industry efforts to transition away from PFAS-containing materials.
SABIC is also demonstrating its integrated development approach, offering customers end-to-end support spanning plastic design, prototyping, testing, and processing through its global Centers of Excellence and Global Application Technology (GApT) facilities.
“SABIC goes beyond material innovation to enable customer success,” said Sergi Monros, Vice President, SABIC Polymers, Specialties Business Unit. “Our advanced technical capabilities and global Centers of Excellence help customers optimize performance, reduce costly design iterations, and accelerate time to market.”
Addressing Key Medical Device Industry Challenges
PFAS-Free Material Alternatives
To help device manufacturers comply with tightening PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) regulations, SABIC is expanding its fluorine-free portfolio. Key offerings include:
- ULTEM™ HU resins and new SILTEM™ HU copolymers for medical tubing applications
- LNP™ ELCRES™ NPCRX9612U resin, UL746G-certified as non-PFAS, for device housings
- LNP™ LUBRILOY™ internally lubricated compounds, formulated without PTFE, for wear and friction components
These materials enable manufacturers to maintain performance while transitioning away from fluoropolymers and PTFE-based formulations.
Enhanced Device Performance and Durability
SABIC is also highlighting materials that improve longevity and reliability in demanding healthcare environments:
- LNP ELCRES™ CRX copolymer resins with best-in-class chemical resistance for equipment and device housings
- LNP™ SLX grades offering impact and UV resistance for transparent medical covers, such as automated external defibrillator (AED) cabinets
- ULTEM™ HU polyetherimide (PEI) resins delivering lightweight structural strength and sterilization compatibility for surgical robot components
To illustrate its drug-delivery capabilities, SABIC is displaying an autoinjector demonstrator incorporating its medical-grade materials.
