Coveris Unveils Monomaterial Packaging Innovation for Tortilla Wraps
In a significant step towards sustainable packaging, Coveris has introduced a groundbreaking monomaterial solution for tortilla wraps, further advancing its No Waste mission. The launch marks a pivotal moment for both the company and its food manufacturing partners, demonstrating how innovation and collaboration can deliver eco-friendly alternatives without compromising product performance.
The development began when a leading tortilla producer approached Coveris with a clear challenge: replace the non-recyclable PA/PE thermoforming structure with a recyclable option that could still guarantee a minimum six-month shelf life, despite the product containing only a small amount of preservatives.
The Coveris Food Science Lab in Gainsborough, UK, took on the challenge. After rigorous testing, the team arrived at a breakthrough: MonoFlex Thermoform, a monomaterial-based top and base thermoforming film. The new material not only preserved the delicate wraps against mould throughout the testing period but also aligned with recyclable waste streams, offering a practical, sustainable alternative.
Beyond its sustainability credentials, the solution brings multiple functional benefits. MonoFlex Thermoform delivers strong barrier protection and puncture resistance, ensuring product freshness and durability. It also offers seamless compatibility with existing packing lines, eliminating the need for disruptive changes in production processes. Brands can further customize the films with full print options in flexographic or rotogravure formats, finished in matte, gloss, or tactile lacquers, creating an enhanced consumer experience and eye-catching shelf appeal.
Speaking on the achievement, Katja Killian, BU Flexibles Business Development Director at Coveris, noted:
“We are extremely pleased with the successful commercial launch of MonoFlex Thermoform for tortilla wraps. This sustainable alternative to non-recyclable materials delivers the same shelf-life performance while saving resources and helping customers meet their sustainability targets. It also showcases the advantage of collaboration between Coveris' production sites and Film Science Lab expertise, enabling the development of high-performance sustainable packaging solutions.”
With the successful debut of MonoFlex Thermoform, Coveris has not only addressed a long-standing industry challenge but also reaffirmed its commitment to creating packaging that protects both products and the planet.
