Two new California wines have been launched in Frugalpac’s paper-based Frugal Bottle, marking another step in the growing adoption of alternative packaging formats within the US wine industry.
The new Petalscape range, created by direct-to-consumer wine retailer Scout & Cellar, part of Full Glass Wine Co., includes a 2025 Sauvignon Blanc and an NV Red Blend. Both wines are packaged in Frugalpac's distinctive paper Frugal Bottle and produced in King City, California, by Monterey Wine Company using Frugalpac's Frugal Bottle Assembly Machine.
A Lightweight Alternative to Glass
The Frugal Bottle is made from 94% recycled paperboard and incorporates a food-grade pouch. According to Frugalpac, the format is around five times lighter than a standard glass wine bottle and can have a carbon footprint up to 84% lower than conventional glass packaging. The company also states that its production requires significantly less water and energy than traditional glass bottles.
The lightweight format could offer particular advantages for transport, handling and outdoor consumption, where traditional glass packaging may be less practical.
Sustainability Meets Premium Wine
Petalscape has positioned the new range around the idea of combining premium California wine with a packaging format designed to reduce the environmental impact associated with conventional bottles.
The Sauvignon Blanc is described as a crisp wine featuring pear, apple, pineapple and guava notes, while the NV Red Blend offers flavours of plum, blackberry and baking spice. The wines were introduced to consumers through a series of Garden Parties hosted across the United States by independent wine consultants.
The outdoor-focused launch also highlights one of the practical benefits of paper-based packaging. The lighter, non-glass format is suited to occasions such as picnics, boating and poolside gatherings, where glass can be inconvenient or restricted.
Growing Adoption of Paper Wine Bottles
The Petalscape launch represents another milestone for Frugalpac in the US market. The company says its Frugal Bottle format has already been adopted by several major retailers and wine producers as interest grows in lower-carbon alternatives to traditional glass packaging.
Monterey Wine Company, which produces the Petalscape bottles in California, was the first company in the United States to manufacture Frugal Bottles locally.
The move also reflects a broader shift within the wine industry, where sustainability is increasingly extending beyond vineyard practices to include the environmental impact of the packaging used to bring wine to consumers.
Packaging Beyond the Vineyard
For decades, the glass bottle has been an almost inseparable part of the premium wine experience. But as brands look to reduce packaging weight, transport emissions and material impact, alternative formats are gaining greater attention.
The launch of Petalscape demonstrates that sustainable packaging is no longer being limited to entry-level or convenience products. Instead, brands are increasingly exploring how premium positioning and alternative packaging materials can coexist.
With two new California wines now joining the growing Frugal Bottle portfolio, the launch adds further momentum to the search for lighter and potentially lower-impact alternatives to one of the wine industry's most traditional packaging formats.
