The Vetropack Group has officially closed its cullet processing facility in St-Prex at the end of February 2026, as part of a strategic realignment of its operations. Alongside the closure, the company has introduced new partnerships to ensure the continued efficiency of glass recycling services across Switzerland.
Strategic Closure of St-Prex Facility
Following the cessation of glass production at the St-Prex site, cullet processing had been temporarily maintained to support approximately 30 municipal partners in the region. However, Vetropack determined that operating a standalone processing facility without integrated production is neither economically nor environmentally sustainable in the long term.
Since announcing the closure in November 2025, the company has worked closely with established partners to develop a seamless transition plan for municipal recycling services.
Regional Experts Step In
To maintain continuity in glass recycling operations, Vetropack has appointed two experienced partners:
- In Western Switzerland, AVJ Transports et Voyages will take over responsibilities for the collection, storage, and redistribution of waste glass. The company, a long-standing collaborator of Vetropack, will operate from its centrally located facility in Eclépens.
- For German-speaking regions, Schneider Umweltservice AG will assume operations at the Oberglatt hub starting April 1, 2026. The company brings extensive expertise in recycling and environmental services.
Both partners are well-established in the Swiss waste management sector and are equipped with the infrastructure and operational capabilities required to ensure a smooth transition.
Refocusing on Core Manufacturing Strengths
Commenting on the transition, Stephen Rayment, Chief Supply Chain Officer at Vetropack, emphasized the strategic importance of the move:
“We are very pleased to have two specialists in AVJ and Schneider Umweltservice, who are well-positioned to offer glass recycling services to municipal partners in our stead in the future. This will allow us to focus on our core business: the development and manufacture of high-quality glass packaging.”
Despite stepping back from direct cullet processing, Vetropack reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability. The company continues to prioritize increasing the proportion of recycled glass in its products and advancing circular packaging solutions.
Ensuring Continuity in Circular Glass Economy
This transition reflects a broader industry trend toward specialization and operational efficiency, where companies focus on core competencies while collaborating with expert partners for adjacent services.
By entrusting recycling operations to dedicated regional specialists, Vetropack ensures that Switzerland’s glass recycling ecosystem remains robust, efficient, and aligned with sustainability goals.
