In a bold move toward advancing sustainable packaging, Amcor, a global leader in responsible packaging solutions, and Metsä Group, a key player in the forestry industry, have announced a strategic collaboration to develop recyclable molded fiber-based food packaging. This partnership represents a fusion of cutting-edge barrier technology with renewable fiber innovation, setting a new benchmark in fiber-based food packaging.
At the heart of the partnership is Muoto™, Metsä Spring’s pioneering molded fiber product made from renewable wood pulp. Known for being biodegradable and recyclable, Muoto™ offers a compelling alternative to traditional plastic packaging. Now, thanks to Amcor’s advanced high-barrier film liner and lidding technology, this molded fiber packaging will offer enhanced protection for perishable food products, ensuring product integrity while extending shelf life.
Bringing Together Sustainability, Innovation, and Functionality
“We’re thrilled to partner with Metsä Group on this forward-thinking initiative,” said Ilya Syshchikov, Amcor’s Vice President, Global Fiber. “Together, we bring a powerful combination of expertise in materials science, packaging engineering, and market insight to deliver fiber-based solutions that meet the highest standards of quality, functionality, and sustainability.”
This collaboration aligns with Amcor’s broader AmFiber™ portfolio, which includes a range of recyclable, fiber-based solutions already available across global markets. These solutions serve diverse segments including snacks, dry culinary goods, meat, dairy, beverages, and personal care. The integration of Amcor’s high-performance barrier technology with Metsä’s Muoto fiber forms the basis of a next-generation solution that is both consumer and environment-friendly.
A Step Forward in Eco-Conscious Packaging
Jarkko Tuominen, Vice President, Projects at Metsä Spring, emphasized the strategic importance of this collaboration:
“This partnership with Amcor marks a major milestone in our pursuit of more sustainable food packaging. By combining our molded fiber technology with Amcor’s functional barriers, we’re creating a solution that not only protects food but also minimizes environmental impact.”
The new packaging solution will be recyclable in the paper stream across most European markets, with a CEPI recyclability score exceeding 80%. Looking ahead, the two companies share the ambition to develop a fully compostable version, further reinforcing their commitment to circular packaging systems.
Commercial Launch Expected Later This Year
Consumers and food brands can expect to see the first wave of these sustainable, molded fiber packaging solutions launch commercially in Europe by the end of this year. With environmental legislation tightening and consumer demand for sustainable alternatives increasing, the timing of this innovation couldn’t be more ideal.
This partnership not only reflects Amcor and Metsä Group’s long-standing relationship but also highlights their shared vision to redefine the future of food packaging through innovation, responsibility, and performance.
