Schreiner MediPharm Expands Needle-Trap System for Large-Volume Syringes !

Schreiner MediPharm, a leading developer and manufacturer of functional labels for the healthcare industry, has further advanced its proven Needle-Trap needle protection system, extending its application to large-volume syringes. The enhanced solution is designed to meet the growing requirements of biologics and biosimilars, which increasingly rely on higher fill volumes.

The company will present the new Needle-Trap solution to an international professional audience for the first time at Pharmapack Europe in Paris, taking place from January 21–22, at Booth 4B18.

Addressing the Needs of Modern Biologics

The market for biologics and biosimilars continues to expand, presenting pharmaceutical manufacturers with new challenges in primary packaging. Highly viscous active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) with complex molecular structures increasingly require large-volume prefilled syringes, with fill volumes of up to 5 ml.

As a result, reliable protection against needlestick injuries must be adapted to these formats to ensure both safe production processes and secure handling by end users.

Needle-Trap Now Available for Up to 5 ml Syringes

In response to these evolving requirements, Schreiner MediPharm has further developed its Needle-Trap system. The label with integrated needle protection is now compatible with 2.25 ml, 3 ml, and 5 ml syringes.

Both the design and functionality have been specifically adapted to ensure reliable protective performance for large-volume syringes. Extensive testing has been carried out to guarantee consistent production quality at Schreiner MediPharm, as well as smooth integration on pharmaceutical manufacturers’ existing labeling equipment.

Compact Design Delivers Cost and Sustainability Benefits

The key advantages of the Needle-Trap system are fully retained—and in some areas enhanced—for large-volume syringes. Compared with conventional needle protection systems or autoinjectors, the compact design enables significant reductions in material usage, costs, and CO₂ emissions.

At the same time, pharmaceutical manufacturers benefit from seamless integration into existing processes. Needle-Trap can be applied using standard dispensing systems, and secondary packaging remains unchanged.

Economic and environmental benefits extend across the entire supply chain, including:

  • Reduced storage and transportation space
  • Lower cooling and logistics requirements
  • More environmentally friendly disposal
