Paramelt Highlights Sustainable Alternatives to Vinyl Chloride Heat Seal Coatings

As packaging regulations continue to tighten around food-contact materials and environmental sustainability, Paramelt is promoting its Aquaseal range of water-based heat seal and barrier coatings as an alternative to traditional solvent-based vinyl chloride coatings used in flexible packaging. The development addresses growing concerns regarding vinyl chloride monomer restrictions, residual solvent content, and the environmental impact associated with conventional vinyl lacquer systems.

The Aquaseal technology platform offers chlorine-free, water-based coating solutions designed for aluminium lidding foils, dairy packaging, confectionery wraps, processed cheese packaging, and other flexible packaging applications. Developed using Dow’s Bluewave dispersion technology, the coatings provide strong heat-sealing performance, excellent adhesion, grease and moisture resistance, and tailored sealing temperatures while eliminating the need for solvent-based formulations.

According to Paramelt, the coatings enable packaging manufacturers to achieve the functionality of traditional vinyl resin systems while supporting sustainability objectives through solvent-free processing and improved environmental performance. The technology also offers compatibility with existing coating and converting processes, helping brands and converters transition to more sustainable packaging structures without significant operational changes.

With increasing demand for safer food-contact packaging and recyclable material solutions, innovations such as Aquaseal are expected to play an important role in the industry's shift toward environmentally responsible flexible packaging.
