In a significant step toward circular packaging, LyondellBasell (LYB) has partnered with Mondelēz International, Amcor, and Taghleef Industries to develop a new flexible packaging solution for Marabou chocolate bars made using recycled plastic content. The collaboration demonstrates how advanced recycling technologies can help transform difficult-to-recycle plastic waste into high-quality food-grade packaging materials.
The new packaging incorporates LYB's CirculenRevive polymers, produced through an ISCC PLUS-certified mass balance approach using recycled feedstock derived from post-consumer mixed plastic waste. As a result, Mondelēz is now able to offer Marabou chocolate packaging sourced from 75% recycled content while maintaining the performance and safety standards required for food packaging applications.
The project highlights the importance of collaboration across the packaging value chain. LYB supplies the recycled polymers, Taghleef Industries develops the base film, and Amcor converts the material into the final flexible packaging structure used by Mondelēz. Together, the partners are demonstrating a scalable model for advancing circularity in flexible packaging.
Looking ahead, LYB plans to support future supply through its MoReTec-1 chemical recycling facility currently under construction in Germany. Once operational, the plant is expected to strengthen the availability of circular feedstocks and further accelerate the adoption of recycled-content packaging solutions across the food industry.
