Global Expansion & Investment in Sustainable Manufacturing
Innovia Films, a global leader in materials science and BOPP film manufacturing, is showcasing its revamped portfolio of label films at Labelexpo. The range includes films for pressure-sensitive labels (PSL), shrink sleeves, and PVC-free graphic materials — all designed to meet growing demands for recyclability and sustainability.
“Labelexpo is an excellent opportunity to engage with industry stakeholders and present solutions that help FMCG brands reach their sustainability targets,” says Simon Huber, Managing Director, Innovia Films Europe.
With a new high-performance extrusion line in Germany, Innovia is reinforcing its commitment to local production and enhanced sustainability. This investment is part of a broader strategy to boost global capacity and support localized supply in both Europe and the Americas.
“These developments mark a significant milestone in our journey to deliver circular solutions for tomorrow’s labels and packaging,” adds Günther Birkner, President, Innovia Films.
Label Film Innovations: From CPE/WPE to Metallized and Coated Films
CPE & WPE: Alternatives to Polyethylene
Clear and white polyethylene films used in home and personal care labelling are being replaced by CPE (Clear Polyolefin) and WPE (White Polyolefin) films. These are:
- ~40% thinner than PE films
- Offer superior clarity and lower haze (ideal for clear-on-clear PET bottle applications)
- Reduce the use of fossil-based raw materials
European & American Production of Coated & Metallized Films
Innovia has developed coated PSL films compatible with all major printing technologies, offering:
- High modularity in print performance
- Compatibility with specialized adhesives for recycling applications
- Metallized options for barrier performance and enhanced aesthetics
“These new solutions give customers greater control over printability and recyclability,” says Aaron Henneger, VP & GM, Innovia Films Americas.
Shrink Sleeve Breakthrough: RayoFloat™ for Recyclable Bottles
A major highlight at Labelexpo is the live demonstration of RayoFloat™, a floatable polyolefin-based shrink sleeve designed to detach cleanly from PET bottles during recycling (sink/float process). This innovation:
- Enables easy separation in recycling streams
- Comes in high-shrink and white versions for light-sensitive products
- Supports switch from opaque to transparent bottles without compromising light protection
In-Mould Label Films for Durable, Recyclable Packaging
Innovia will also present its RayoForm™ in-mould BOPP label films, suitable for blow- or injection-moulded PP containers. These:
- Eliminate the need for adhesives
- Facilitate mono-material packaging
- Support multi-use packaging with full recyclability
“These solutions open exciting new opportunities for durable and functional packaging,” says Lucija Kralj, Business Unit Director – Labels EMEA.
Post-Consumer Recycled Content: Encore™ RFC35m35
Innovia’s Encore™ range integrates post-consumer recycled content into label films. A new development, Encore RFC35m35, features:
- 35% mechanically recycled content
- High clarity and excellent cuttability
- Ideal for roll-fed wraparound labels
Fully Recyclable Wet Wipe Label Solutions
Innovia introduces a mono-material laminate specifically designed for wet wipe packaging. Key features:
- Exceptional durability and moisture resistance
- Fully recyclable
- Eliminates the need for multi-material label structures
- Aligns with circular economy goals
“This solution balances functionality, recyclability, and convenience – setting a new benchmark for wet wipe packaging,” adds Kralj.
PVC-Free Graphic Films: Eco-Friendly and High-Performance
Innovia's Rayoart™ PVC-free graphic films are made from BOPP and produced via an innovative coating process that:
- Reduces lifecycle environmental impact
- Eliminates use of hazardous materials like chlorine
- Enhances recyclability and print performance
“This is a step-change for the graphics industry. Our tailor-made coater enables specialty coated, PVC-free films that are recyclable and high-performing,” concludes Huber.
Looking Ahead: A Sustainable Film Future
From post-consumer recycled content integration to floatable sleeves, in-mould labelling, and PVC-free graphics, Innovia Films is redefining sustainability in label and packaging materials — delivering both performance and planet-positive benefits.
