In a significant stride toward sustainable packaging, Berry Global Group, Inc. and Nestlé Purina PetCare have collaborated to launch new canisters for Friskies® Party Mix® cat treats, crafted entirely from 100% recycled plastic—excluding the lid and label. This initiative underscores both companies' commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation in packaging solutions.
The revamped 20oz and 30oz canisters are produced using post-consumer recycled (PCR) polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a widely collected and recyclable material. By utilizing mechanically recycled PET sourced from curbside collection streams, the partnership aims to reduce reliance on virgin plastics and promote a circular economy .
"We believe future generations of people and pets deserve safe and healthy spaces to roam and play," stated Franco Ignelzi, Expert Packaging at Nestlé Purina. "This vision includes a future where none of our product packaging ends up in a landfill and where our packaging is not only recyclable but incorporates recycled content. This project is an important step toward that vision."
The transition to 100% recycled plastic is projected to eliminate over 500 metric tons of virgin plastic annually, resulting in a greenhouse gas reduction equivalent to 694 metric tons of carbon dioxide. Once emptied, the canisters can be placed in recycling bins, allowing the material to be repurposed into new products, thereby reinforcing the closed-loop recycling system .
Nicole Pawlowski, Senior Strategic Account Director at Berry Global, remarked, "This project reflects what is possible when partners collaborate to eliminate waste and develop packaging for circularity. It also reflects the effort and energy of many great teams within both companies. We are very proud of this partnership and look forward to future projects with Nestlé."
The canisters are manufactured at one of Berry’s Safe Quality Food (SQF)-certified facilities, ensuring that the packaging meets stringent food safety standards while advancing sustainability goals .
This initiative aligns with Nestlé Purina's broader commitment to environmental stewardship and Berry Global's dedication to innovative, sustainable packaging solutions. Consumers can expect to see the new recyclable canisters on shelves across the U.S. this summer, marking a tangible step forward in reducing plastic waste and promoting eco-friendly practices in the pet care industry.
