Dongsung Chemical and CJ Biomaterials Introduce First PHA-Based ECOVIVA® Hotmelt Adhesive Available in the US Market

  • New adhesive designed for cosmetics and consumer packaging, household goods, and electronics
  • Formulated with measurable biobased content and designed to reduce CO₂ emissions compared to conventional adhesives
  • PHA-based adhesive offers high cold resistance and can be applied using existing hot melt nozzles and rollers

CJ Biomaterials, Inc., a division of South Korea-based CJ CheilJedang and a primary producer of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biopolymers, has partnered with Dongsung Chemical to introduce the first PHA-based hotmelt adhesive available in the US market. Designed for packaging applications, the ECOVIVA® Hotmelt Adhesive is optimized for cosmetics packaging, household goods, electronics, and other consumer packaging, and it effectively bonds challenging substrates, including paper to aluminum and paper to acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS).

ECOVIVA® Hotmelt Adhesive is formulated with biomass content, including CJ Biomaterials’ proprietary amorphous PHA biopolymer, PHACT™ A1000P. The adhesive is designed to significantly reduce CO2 emissions compared to conventional polyisobutylene (PIB) adhesives, and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) adhesives. The adhesive has also received DIN CERTCO (Germany) biobased certification.

This adhesive offers high cold resistance and enables adhesion at room temperature and under low pressure. The adhesive can also be applied using existing hot melt nozzles and rollers, and it is suitable for components of various shapes and sizes. In partnership with COSMAX, the world’s leading cosmetics ODM (Original Development Manufacturing) company, PHA-based ECOVIVA® Hotmelt Adhesive is already in use in its packaging process for eyeshadow products.

“By matching the performance of conventional hotmelt adhesives while introducing renewable, biobased content, this PHA-based hotmelt adhesive gives packaging manufacturers a more sustainable option for meeting their customers’ needs and increasingly demanding carbon and source reduction targets required by global climate and packaging frameworks,” says Max Senechal, Chief Commercial Officer at CJ Biomaterials.

PHACT™ A1000P is produced via the fermentation of plant-based sugars and is certified as biobased by DIN CERTCO and OK biobased 4-stars by TÜV AUSTRIA. It is a soft, flexible PHA that reduces brittleness and improves processability when combined with other biopolymers, delivering performance that is equal or superior to conventional petroleum-based polymers.
