Global packaging supplier Amcor announced December 7 the launch of Eco-Tite R in Europe, the first polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC)-free shrink bag for fresh and processed meat, poultry and some cheeses designed to be recycled. The material is to maximize shelf-life, maintain food safety, reduce food waste and can be recycled in existing polyethylene (PE) plastic recycling streams.

MOO Premium Foods co-founder Mick Sanders says it was a barrage of questions he received from nine-year-olds, at a primary school talk, that sparked the idea for the yoghurt tubs created with 100 per cent reclaimed Ocean Bound Plastic.

Ocean Bound Plastic is the term to describe all the plastic waste that has ended up in the ocean, as well as plastic rubbish found within 50km of a coastline that is not managed and at risk of ending up as marine debris.

Indorama Ventures has been working for six years on a PET tray recycling project at its Verdun plant in Wellman France Recycling, with support from VALORPLAST and CITEO. The project aims to recycle single- and multi-layer PET trays.

VALORPLAST claims to have collected significant quantities of post-consumer PET trays and Wellman has conducted a number of industrial experiments. The companies add that the flakes produced by the process are being tested by several players to develop high-quality applications.

The Sustainability Consortium (TSC), alongside P&G, Burt’s Bees, Colgate-Palmolive, GSK, Sustainable Packaging Coalition, The Recycling Partnership, Balcones Resources, University of Arkansas, and Arizona State University have formed a new coalition to accelerate progress on creating resources to recycle small format packaging and other materials through science-based, collective action projects. 

This is the first coalition of its kind to include CPG companies, non-profits and universities.
