India’s First Paper Bottle Launched by Rhea Distilleries

The debut, announced during UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s trade visit to India on 9 October, highlights cross-border innovation in the drinks industry.

The project is the result of a three-way partnership between UK sustainable packaging pioneer Frugalpac, Indian conglomerate ITC’s Packaging and Printing Business, and Rhea Distilleries.

Frugal Bottle: A Revolution in Eco-Friendly Innovation
Developed by Ipswich-based Frugalpac, the Frugal Bottle is the world’s first commercially available paper bottle for wines and spirits. Made from 94% recycled paperboard with a food-grade liner, it is five times lighter than glass and has a carbon footprint up to six times lower. Its design allows the paper shell to be easily separated and recycled through existing waste streams.

Expanded PolyStyrene (EPS) microplastics are widely recognised as a significant contributor to marine plastic pollution, making up over 40% of plastic debris on Asian beaches.¹ Bans on EPS packaging have gained tremendous momentum recently, particularly in the European Union and the wider Caribbean region.^2,3 Legislation banning the use of EPS packaging has also been introduced in Fiji, the Philippines, and regions in the United States, just to name a few.^4,5,6

Krones’ revolutionary bottle design can be used to make containers that are sustainable and weigh very little, but its advantages are also apparent during the bottle production and processing stages. The bottles have excellent stackability even without the stabilising effect of nitrogen pressurisation, with a filled topload of up to 40 kilograms.

Revolution Beauty, which expanded into Walmart earlier this year, has launched an exclusive makeup collection inspired by the holiday film, Elf, inviting consumers to transport themselves to the North Pole and help spread holiday cheer.

The Elf x Revolution Beauty collection includes 10 nostalgic products ranging from Santa red lip gloss to glimmering highlighters and eyeshadows.

Timed with the 20th anniversary of the Christmas movie, the festive Elf-inspired cosmetics collection is available in-store and online at Walmart, starting November 4, 2023.

Domestic paper industry frets as imports zoom 43%

Import of paper and paperboard continues unabated. After a 25 per cent jump in FY23 in volume terms, paper imports have further risen by 43 per cent in the first half of FY24, according to DGCI&S data.

The surge in imports is mainly due to a 257 per cent growth in import of paper and paperboard from the ASEAN region at zero import duty under a free trade agreement.

In H1 FY24, import of paper and paperboard increased to 9.59 lakh tonnes from 6.72 lakh tonnes in H1 FY23. Imports from ASEAN grew from 81,000 tonnes in H1 FY23 to 2.88 lakh tonnes in H1 FY24.

Bondi residents were greeted with a powerful message this morning after a four-metre-high plastic ‘poop emoji’, representing the amount of waste (7.5 tonnes) that enters the world’s oceans every 30 seconds, was installed on Bondi Beach.

B-Corp-certified sustainable packaging company, Better Packaging Co., commissioned and strategically placed the striking sculpture* on Bondi Beach to coincide with World Environment Day (5 June).

The theme of this year's United Nations global program is #BeatPlasticPollution, with over 100 initiatives taking place worldwide.

WestRock and ENGIE sign agreement to add renewable energy to U.S. grid

The agreements support two of ENGIE’s solar projects – Bernard Creek located in Wharton County, Texas and Chillingham Solar located in Bell County, Texas – for an aggregate of 282 megawatts (MW).

The new projects comprise one element of WestRock’s strategy to pursue a science-based target (SBT) to reduce Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 27.5% by 2030. Schneider Electric provided advisory services and strategy management for the WestRock and ENGIE agreements.
