Coveris Unveils Breakthrough Board-Based Tray for Meat, Fish & Poultry, Slashing Plastic Use by 90%

In a bold stride toward packaging sustainability, Coveris has launched BarrierFresh MAP, a game changing board based tray solution designed for the meat, fish, and poultry (MFP) sector. This innovative packaging reduces plastic content by up to 90%, all while preserving shelf-life, product protection, and full recyclability.

Replacing traditional rigid plastic trays, BarrierFresh MAP integrates sustainably sourced board with a specially developed EVOH barrier film. The result is a fully printable, hermetically sealed, mono-SKU tray that ensures product freshness for up to 21 days. With its lightweight structure and stackability, the tray functions seamlessly in current packaging lines, making it an ideal swap in solution for breaded poultry, seafood, and prepared food applications.

Beyond operational compatibility, the tray offers an elevated shelf presence and clear messaging opportunities addressing the growing demand for visually impactful yet eco-conscious packaging in retail.

Will Mercer, R&D Director at Coveris' Paper Business Unit, emphasized the significance of the innovation:

“Our BarrierFresh MAP solution marks a unique breakthrough for this category offering a reduced-plastic, reduced-packaging solution that delivers the same barrier performance and shelf-life as traditional plastic trays, while remaining recyclable for consumers. It’s a true reflection of our ‘No Waste’ vision.”

This launch adds to Coveris' growing portfolio of fibre based, recyclable packaging formats, reinforcing the company’s leadership in next-gen sustainable solutions that don’t compromise on functionality or aesthetics.
