- TemperPack introduces a packaging solution for e-commerce, made from WaveKraft paper, offering cushioning and recyclability.
- The mailer is designed for shipping fragile products like electronics, cosmetics, and specialty foods, replacing traditional shipping boxes.
- Made from FSC-certified paper, 50% of which is recycled, and rated “widely recyclable,” the mailer is said to reduce waste and improve shipping efficiency.
TemperPack has developed recyclable and padded mailer packaging for e-commerce shippers. The packaging is made from the WaveKraft paper-based substrate material, designed to offer 50–80% better cushioning protection than plastic or conventional padded mailers.
“E-commerce has outgrown the limitations of legacy packaging formats,” says Charles Vincent, TemperPack co-founder and chief technology officer.
“We engineered this mailer to deliver the protection of a box with the efficiency of an envelope while meeting the recyclability standards brands and consumers increasingly expect.”
The mailer has a gusseted design that allows it to open wide while maintaining its shape, offering space for the item, and making it easy to pack. It also provides greater capacity, cushioning, and ease of operation, according to TemperPack.
Shipping fragile items
TemperPack’s e-commerce solution is suitable for fragile items such as small electronics, cosmetics, and specialty foods.
The materials science company behind the mailer says traditional boxes are most commonly used for shipping such fragile items. It adds that using boxes “leads to unnecessary waste: added DIM weight, added dunnage, greater inventory requirements, and additional steps in fulfillment.”
According to the company, moving away from boxes for fragile item shipping was previously not possible due to a lack of cushioning and structure in conventional padded mailers. TemperPack says its mailers solve this shortcoming.
“TemperPack mailers have passed independent lab testing in accordance with the International Safe Transit Association 6 Amazon Overbox test protocol, which ensures packaging can survive e-commerce fulfillment. Additional drop testing shows that WaveKraft mailers provide greater shock absorption compared to traditional plastic mailers and other recyclable cushioned options,” the company says.
The padded mailers are further made of paper sourced from FSC-certified paper mills, 50% of which is recycled. The mailer is also rated “widely recyclable” by How2Recycle.
