In a groundbreaking move to combat single-use waste, Cardiff has introduced the Bower Cup Recycling Project, offering residents a 5p reward for each paper cup recycled through the Bower app. This three-month pilot, commencing on April 22, 2025, is a collaboration between the National Cup Recycling Scheme, Bower, and Keep Wales Tidy, aiming to make recycling more accessible and engaging.
How It Works :
-
Download the Bower App : Available on both iOS and Android platforms, the Bower app allows users to scan and track their recycling activities.
-
Scan Your Cup : After purchasing a drink in a paper cup from participating outlets like Caffè Nero, Costa Coffee, Greggs, McDonald’s, or Pret a Manger, users scan the cup using the app.
-
Return for Recycling : The used cup is then returned to any participating store for proper recycling.
-
Earn Rewards : Each returned cup earns the user a 5p reward, credited via the app.
This initiative addresses the significant environmental challenge posed by the estimated 2.5 billion paper cups disposed of annually in the UK, many of which end up in landfills due to improper recycling. By incentivizing recycling, the project aims to reduce waste and promote sustainable behaviors among consumers.
The Bower app enhances the recycling experience by providing users with tools to manage and recycle waste more efficiently. It offers rewards for recycling, tracks CO₂ savings, and educates users on proper waste disposal methods. With over 700,000 users globally, Bower has been recognized as one of Europe's top sustainability apps.
This pilot program not only encourages individual action but also represents a unique collaboration between competing brands, uniting in the fight against environmental degradation. Pending the success of this trial, the initiative may serve as a model for similar programs across the UK, fostering a culture of sustainability and responsible consumption.
