What if the white ink on flexible packaging could also protect the product from oxygen? Siegwerk is addressing exactly that with CIRKIT OXYBAR WHITE, a new barrier ink that combines white opacity and oxygen barrier performance in a single printable layer.
One layer, two functions
CIRKIT OXYBAR WHITE turns the white print layer into part of the packaging's barrier system. According to Siegwerk, it achieves an oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of less than 5 cc/m²/day at 50% relative humidity, while providing a bright, opaque white finish. The ink can also be applied in a single pass using standard printing processes.
By combining two functions in one layer, the technology can potentially reduce structural complexity and support the development of simplified mono-material packaging. Siegwerk says it may replace conventional oxygen-barrier materials such as EVOH, PVdC, aluminium foil and metallized films in applications where an additional moisture barrier is not required.
Designed for existing printing processes
A key advantage for converters is that CIRKIT OXYBAR WHITE is designed for standard gravure and flexographic equipment. This allows barrier functionality to be integrated into the printing workflow rather than requiring a separate coating or lamination step.
The white pigmentation also provides a practical quality-control benefit, allowing converters to visually check coverage during production.
Where can it be used?
Siegwerk positions the technology for applications including coffee and tea, snacks and spices, confectionery and baked goods, hygiene and personal care, and frozen and chilled foods.
