Schreiner MediPharm, a leading developer and manufacturer of innovative functional labels for the healthcare industry, in collaboration with CDMO OECHSLERhealth, has introduced Cap-Lock for Vials a novel solution enabling both analog and digital first-opening indication. The innovation addresses critical challenges related to product integrity, patient safety, and the digitalization of primary pharmaceutical packaging, and was unveiled at Pharmapack in Paris.
Ensuring the integrity of primary containers is essential for a secure pharmaceutical supply chain. Conventional flip-off caps used on vials can reach their limits, as tampering attempts may go undetected. At the same time, the industry is increasingly seeking digital solutions to automate supply-chain processes and enhance transparency. Responding to these needs, Schreiner MediPharm and OECHSLERhealth have jointly developed the Cap-Lock system specifically for vial applications.
The Cap-Lock label features a unique design with irreversible first-opening indication. A plastic cap developed by OECHSLERhealth is placed over the sealed vial and permanently interlocks with the flip-off cap. As the cap and vial share the same diameter, Schreiner MediPharm’s functional label can be seamlessly applied across both components. Upon opening, the Cap-Lock label is irreversibly destroyed, providing clear visual evidence of first opening and preventing undetected reclosure.
Beyond its physical tamper-evidence function, Cap-Lock for Vials integrates advanced digital capabilities. An RFID chip embedded in the label enables digital first-opening detection and unit-level tracking of individual vials. Previously opened containers can thus be automatically identified, supporting efficient medication management processes—for example in hospital settings. Additionally, integrated NFC functionality enables simple smartphone-based authentication, strengthening product and brand protection.
Cap-Lock for Vials is compatible with all standard vial formats and helps pharmaceutical manufacturers reliably safeguard product integrity from filling through administration. By combining unmistakable first-opening indication with digital connectivity, the solution demonstrates how analog security and digital value can be seamlessly integrated. Cap-Lock therefore represents a forward-looking packaging innovation meeting growing industry demands for integrity, transparency, and automation across the pharmaceutical supply chain.
