Nestlé and Smurfit Westrock Launch First-Ever Paper-Based Quality Street Tub for a Greener Christmas

Smurfit Westrock and Nestlé Unveil Innovative Paper-Based Quality Street Tub, Driving Sustainability this Christmas

Smurfit Westrock and Nestlé are making waves this holiday season with a ground-breaking packaging solution for the iconic Quality Street chocolates. In a bold move towards sustainability, the two companies have collaborated to launch a pioneering paper-based tub, marking a significant milestone in Nestlé's ongoing efforts to reduce virgin plastic usage.

Hitting Tesco shelves this week, this eco-friendly, beautifully designed paper tub is the first of its kind for the much-loved Quality Street brand, creating a buzz in the world of sustainable packaging. The switch not only maintains the brand’s iconic hexagonal shape and vibrant purple color but also ensures that both the tub and the paper wrappers, introduced in 2022, can be fully recycled at home.

By partnering with Smurfit Westrock, Nestlé is not only reducing plastic waste but also addressing carbon emissions. The new packaging design allows for more boxes to be stacked on a pallet, leading to fewer shipments and significantly lowering CO2 emissions. This innovative solution comes as part of Nestlé’s ongoing commitment to driving sustainability across its operations.

Saverio Mayer, CEO of Europe, MEA & APAC at Smurfit Westrock, commented: “This paper-based replacement offers a host of benefits in design, functionality, and sustainability. We’re excited to bring a standout solution to an iconic brand while integrating seamlessly into household recycling. It’s a product we hope will appeal to environmentally conscious consumers who still want to enjoy their favourite Quality Street chocolates.”

Nestlé’s Senior Brand Manager for Quality Street, Jemma Handley, added: “We’re thrilled to see how fans will respond to the paper tub. We’re proud to be the first major brand to trial this for Christmas, and we think it not only looks beautiful but will also help shoppers make more eco-friendly choices.”

The new paper tub will be sold alongside the traditional plastic version in select Tesco stores, offering consumers a greener option without compromising the product they love. This partnership marks yet another stride in Smurfit Westrock’s Better Planet Packaging initiative, continuing to innovate by replacing plastic with sustainable alternatives.

This holiday season, Smurfit Westrock and Nestlé are not only delivering chocolates but also a gift to the planet.
