Georgia-Pacific to acquire Anchor Packaging

Anchor Packaging touts itself as being the eighth largest plastic packaging thermoformer in North America, while Georgia-Pacific is one of the leading fiber and tissue product manufacturers. The companies indicate their combination will create synergies to drive growth and innovation, especially to serve the food and beverage sectors.

“This partnership allows us to expand our product portfolio, strengthen our supply chain and accelerate our commitment to innovation,” said Anchor Packaging President and CEO Jeff Wolff in the news release.

Anchor Packaging is based in St. Louis and has multiple facilities in Arkansas, Wisconsin and Argentina. TJC has owned the company since 2019, at which time Anchor announced a plan to accelerate growth. The Hermann family, who founded Anchor in 1963, continued to have ownership alongside TJC.

“Adding Anchor Packaging to Georgia-Pacific’s portfolio aligns perfectly with our vision to be a preferred partner in providing innovative food and beverage packaging and tableware solutions to our customers,” said Dixie President Fernando González in the news release.

In June 2024, Georgia-Pacific began production at a new $425 million Dixie facility in Jackson, Tennessee, where it manufactures items such as plates, bowls, platters and deep dishes. This is the company’s first greenfield plant build for Dixie table ware products since 1991. At that time, González said the new plant would help to meet the growing consumer demand for Dixie products.

In 2020, Anchor acquired thermoformer Panoramic. In 2021, it broke ground on a $21.5 million expansion of the Paragould, Arkansas, manufacturing facility, which it completed in 2022.

TJC, previously called The Jordan Company, has invested in other packaging companies as well. It acquired flexible packaging manufacturer Soteria from private investor Ardian in 2023. It invested in flexible packaging company Five Star Holding in 2022. In 2018, TJC acquired Carlisle FoodService Products (CFS) from Carlisle Companies.
