CARBIOS Secures First Commercial Deals for Biorecycled PET with L’Oréal and L'Occitane en Provence

Biorecycled plastics move toward industrial-scale adoption with landmark partnerships
In a significant leap toward sustainable packaging, CARBIOS has signed its first multi-year commercial contracts for biorecycled PET with two global beauty giants L'ORÉAL and L'Occitane en Provence. These landmark agreements mark a crucial milestone for the French biotech firm and signal the cosmetics industry's growing shift toward innovative, enzymatic plastic recycling.

The contracts secure future supply of CARBIOS’ enzymatically recycled PET (r-PET) from its upcoming commercial scale facility in Longlaville, France. Scheduled to be one of the first plants of its kind in the world, this site will use CARBIOS’ proprietary biological recycling technology to break down used plastics into their original monomers enabling true circularity and maintaining virgin-quality material.

“This is a defining moment for CARBIOS,” said Vincent Kamel, CEO of CARBIOS. “These agreements with L'ORÉAL and L'Occitane en Provence two of the most respected and sustainability focused brands in the world are a powerful endorsement of our technology and our commitment to building a high-performance, circular plastics economy.”

For both beauty companies, the move aligns closely with ambitious environmental targets. L'ORÉAL emphasized the deal as part of their ongoing mission to partner with cutting-edge innovators in sustainable packaging, while L'Occitane en Provence praised the agreement as a catalyst for accelerating their transition toward more circular and eco-conscious packaging systems.

Jacques Playe, Director of Development and Packaging at L’ORÉAL, noted : “This contract underlines our commitment to working with innovative players in PET recycling. CARBIOS’ enzymatic solution represents a major advancement for the packaging industry.”

David Bayard, R&D Packaging Director at L'Occitane en Provence, added: “Together with CARBIOS, we are putting into motion a shared ambition to build a high-performance European recycling industry and take concrete steps toward a circular plastics economy.”

CARBIOS’ enzymatic technology offers a compelling alternative to conventional mechanical recycling by producing high-purity, fully recyclable PET including from hard-to-recycle waste streams like colored bottles or polyester textiles. With demand for premium grade recycled plastic soaring, especially in consumer goods and beauty sectors, these contracts validate both the viability of the technology and the readiness of the market.

As CARBIOS gears up to open the Longlaville plant, these partnerships represent more than just early wins they mark a pivotal shift in the global packaging landscape.
