At the 17th annual European Bioplastics (EUBP) Conference, which took place on 6/7 December in Berlin, industry experts discussed the latest innovations in the bioplastics sector and drove the debate on most recent political developments. These included in particular the Commission’s first policy framework on innovative bioplastic materials as well as the proposal for a Regulation on Packaging and Packaging Waste (PPWR). Both experts and policymakers agreed that the regulatory environment for bioplastics requires a continuous close cooperation between industry and politics.

The report states that due to environmental concerns, such as carbon dioxide emission, water pollution, and toxic waste, governments have enforced regulations for the use of conventional plastic, encouraging the market growth of bioplastics, although they can come with high production costs and those derived from polylactide (PLA) can be hard to recycle. Bio-PET material accounted for 66% of revenue in the global bioplastics market in 2019, followed by PLA and PLA blends.

Berlin, 9 September 2020 – In response to the new report “Biodegradable and compostable plastics – challenges and opportunities” by the European Environment Agency (EEA), European Bioplastics (EUBP) highlights the need to acknowledge successful precedents in the deployment of these innovative materials in collaboration with a receptive community of consumers. Unfortunately, several media outlets made use of a biased interpretation of the report to draw a distorted picture of biodegradable and compostable plastics.

With a growing need to develop sustainable alternatives to plastic, especially in the packaging industry, many novel technologies have surfaced. Bioplastics is one such category of substitutes for the highly versatile and highly polluting plastic.

Bioplastics are considered to be a lot more eco-friendly than ordinary plastics and are quickly replacing them in many industries. However, there are many misconception in the consumer community regarding the production and disposal of the same.
