The partners are combining Solidus’ expertise in fully recyclable fibre-based packaging with BlakBear’s wireless freshness sensors to demonstrate how innovation can transform food safety, shelf life and combat food waste.

Tracking freshness from inside the packaging

BlakBear’s technology uses miniature sensors placed inside food packaging to monitor freshness in real time. These sensors measure gases released as food spoils, such as volatile compounds like ammonia, as well as temperature.

Run in partnership with environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful and the college, the initiative saw RVM usage increase eighty-fold compared with the same period last year. Students deposited 20,177 containers during the trial—up from just 255 previously—redeeming 80% of the 20p vouchers issued.

However, once the incentive ended, weekly recycling levels fell sharply, dropping 91% to 346 containers, highlighting the influence financial rewards can have on recycling habits.

The UK instant mash brand said the important milestone is part of its ongoing dedication to environmental stewardship from farm to fork. The packaging is the product of more than three years of development and extensive testing in partnership with packaging experts Tungate.

As part of the scheme, innovative stickers will replace plastic overwraps on around 1.8m Cadbury Crunchie four bar multipacks that are sold in Tesco stores.

In a first move, SDC will offer organic white milk in SIG Terra Alu-free + Full barrier. This innovation, developed by SIG, is the world’s first full-barrier aseptic carton packaging material without an aluminum layer.
