  • UPM Raflatac reveals PP label material made from post-consumer recycled plastic

    News:
The new UPM Raflatac PP PCR Clear and White products are made with a chemical recycling technology that uses a mass-balance approach to deliver “virgin-like” resin feedstock. Reportedly with the same properties as standard PP films, these PP PCR films can be used in different label applications, including rigid food packaging. With this new product, UPM Raflatac claims that customers and brand owners can achieve the same performance and cut their footprint by decreasing the amount of virgin material used. “We are happy to be involved in our industry’s shift toward more circular solutions and this innovative product is the first of its kind available on the market. It is a concrete outcome of our efforts to label a smarter future beyond fossils by developing products that reduce the use of non-renewable materials and treat waste as a valuable resource,” says Antti Jääskeläinen, Executive Vice President, UPM Raflatac. As per UPM Raflatac’s standard procedure, the whole value chain of PP PCR films has ISCC PLUS certification. This sustainability certification scheme verifies that the mass balance accounting follows predefined and transparent rules. In addition, it provides traceability along the supply chain, from the feedstock to the final product. The PP PCR films have been developed leveraging TRUCIRCLE, SABIC’s portfolio of solutions that span design for recyclability - mechanically recycled products, certified circular products from feedstock recycling of plastic waste streams, and certified renewable products from bio-based feedstock. UPM Raflatac says that the “high quality” of the post-consumer recycled plastic used in this application is secured through chemical recycling, turning plastic polymers back into their original molecules. The company claims that these can be reformed into polypropylene which is equal to one made from virgin raw materials and fulfills strict food safety regulations. The chemical recycling process reportedly makes it possible to use recycled plastics in applications that could not utilize recycled materials before, such as food applications.
  • Toppan Launches Food Packaging System for Freshness Preservation and Lower Environmental Impact

    News:

Tokyo –February 12, 2020 – Toppan Printing (Toppan) (TSE:7911), a global leader in communication, security, packaging, décor materials, and electronics solutions, will launch sales of a new food packaging system called Green Flat, which addresses the need to reduce plastic packaging and can be used as an alternative to conventional skin packs.

Skin packs are becoming widely used in Europe, North America, and Asia because their complete sealing helps to maintain the freshness of food and extend shelf lives due to the reduction of drip from food during storage. Green Flat replaces the polystyrene or plastic tray often used in skin packs with a paper-based material incorporating Toppan’s proprietary GL FILM. This provides freshness retention and lowers environmental impact by reducing the use of plastic without sacrificing functionality. The tray can be made using paper from certified forests and, because it is flat, can also be used as a chopping board for preparing food.

In combination with the barrier film applied over the product, lamination of the tray with GL FILM, Toppan’s original transparent barrier film, means that food is protected from oxygen, moisture, and other external impacts, further enhancing content preservation. Green Flat is also available in a non-barrier type ideal for such items as cosmetics and toiletries.

Green Flat also offers advantages in terms of attractive package design and eye-catching displays in stores. High-quality printing is possible on both surfaces of the tray and the prevention of drip made possible by the tight seal means that even packages for fresh foods can be stood up or suspended from hooks for display. QR code can also be printed onto the tray to enhance customer engagement by providing information or running online or online/offline hybrid promotions.

The Green Flat system offered by Toppan will consist of the Green Flat tray, a skin pack filling system, skin pack film, and a consulting service for system implementation. Samples are being made available from February 2020, and full-scale sales are scheduled to begin in December. Comprehensive consulting services will be offered to enable customers to create appealing designs, implement effective promotions, and make the most of shop space.

“Today there is strong demand for packaging that maintains freshness but also reduces environmental impact by addressing such issues as marine plastic pollution and food waste,” said Shingo Wada, general manager of business strategy in Toppan’s western Japan division. “Toppan strives to meet this demand by leveraging extensive experience in paper-based packaging and developing a range of products incorporating its advanced GL BARRIER technology. As a new addition to our lineup, Green Flat provides outstanding freshness preservation, better environmental performance, and exciting possibilities for package designs and displays that create an impact in stores.”

  • Chaayos: What an experience with teas

Yesterday afternoon I got a surprise in office when I was suddenly served warm tea on my desk. You will be thinking so what was so great that I was surprised? Simple reason, it was a traditional tea that we find on roadside corner tea stalls that we all love in hard day's work but we hardly get such ready tea in our sophisticated offices. The reason is simple, if we order from roadside corner then hygiene is an issue. So this was something that came in the area new and experimented by our Kanpur boy Rohit.
