Nithin Raikar, SABIC senior business manager, will give a presentation, entitled “Keeping Medical Equipment Clean and Durable: High Performance Copolymers to Address Infection Control Challenges” on Nov. 5 at 3:00 p.m. EST, as part of the Tech Theater track. At its virtual booth, SABIC will provide additional information on material solutions that address healthcare trends such as robotics, connected devices, infection control and sustainability.

Huhtamaki Flexible Packaging Europe is strongly committed to meeting this challenge for flexiblepackaging and, specifically, for laminated tube applications. ‘We recently succeeded in integrating the first quantities of recycled plastics into one of our standard plastic barrier laminate for tubes’, says Thomas Stroh, R&D Manager at Huhtamaki Flexible Packaging Europe. ‘This development brings us a major step closer to contributing to the EU’s packaging recycling targets for flexible packaging formats.’

By working together, the two organisations can provide sustainable fibre based packaging solutions that will replace hard to recycle packaging made from combined materials such as cardboard and plastic.

ALPLA switched its PET Recycling Team plants in Wöllersdorf, Austria, and Radomsko, Poland, to a mix of electricity from renewable sources in order to produce carbon-neutral rPET (= recycled polyethylene terephthalate). ‘This step has already had a big impact on the carbon footprint of our food-grade regranulate – according to the calculations, emissions are cut by up to 90 per cent compared with virgin material. The feedback from the market regarding this further development has been very good,’ explains Georg Lässer, Head of Recycling at ALPLA.

EcoVadis, the global business sustainability ratings organisation, annually assesses companies’ performance on international sustainability standards1 covering four key areas: environment, labour and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement. Mondi’s overall score of 82% for 2020 is up from 78% in last year’s assessment, with 90% in the Environment and Labour & Human Rights categories.
