H&M begins using paper packaging for online orders

The decision is part of the company’s sustainability pledge to use 25 percent less packaging between 2018 and 2025, including the replacement of single-use packaging. The paper is uncoated, making it easier to recycle and takes up a small amount of space in delivery, allowing for larger deliveries at one time.

Plastic bags will still be used to wrap products inside the packaging to ensure product safety. However, the company states it is currently working towards a sustainable alternative.

The metal boxes are considered to be a ‘modern, sustainable packaging solution’ by the brand.

Metal was chosen for the cases because it is economical and has a low carbon footprint due to the material’s high recyclability rate, according to the brand.

While the packaging of the two whiskies is identical in structure, the separate cases display different colours and designs. Both the 12-year-old and 18-year-old tins feature the Dewar’s white label.

The boxes were produced by IPL Packaging, and feature a matte varnish finish.

A high-density polyethylene (HDPE) resin that offers significantly improved moisture barrier for multilayer flexible packaging and enables development of more recyclable polyethylene (PE) films has been introduced.

From Nova Chemicals,  the new resin — named Surpass HPs267-AB HDPE — is designed for blown-film applications. Nova reports that it delivers up to 20% an increase in water-vapor transmission performance in multilayer coextruded films vs. Nova’s best-in-class Surpass HPs167-AB resin.

Until now, masterbatch has generally been made using virgin material as a carrier resin. This means that at typical let-down ratios, the finished product would contain 3 to 5 percent non-recycled plastic. With major consumer goods companies actively defining sustainability goals of 100 percent PCR polyolefin packaging, Avient has responded by developing Rejoin PCR Masterbatch in customizable colors and special effects.

Alexis Van Maercke, secretary-general of APEAL, said: “The four key areas of action will include a focus on optimising separate waste collection, establishing a scrap quality standard, the collection and sorting of steel closures, and designing for recyclability.

“As APEAL’s recycling report published in 2018 illustrates, separate collection is the best way of guaranteeing high-quality input into recycling operations. It was therefore encouraging to see this highlighted in the Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP) 2.0 report adopted by the European Parliament last 9th February.
