This patent-pending compostable lidding is the only BPI-certified lidding that works with new multi-prong technology found in the leading brand of single-serve brewing machines. C-P’s proprietary compostable lidding allows several prongs to puncture the coffee pod without tearing, allowing multiple streams of hot water to saturate coffee grounds—extracting more aroma and flavor.

This compostable lidding joins the C-P GreenStream™ portfolio of sustainable packaging solutions designed to minimize environmental impact.

PFE tested a bag made with two layers of film and a polyethylene closure. The outer layer, made of Scholle IPN’s RecShield^®, is a barrier film specifically designed to keep unwanted flavors from migrating through the film into the water. The inner layer consists of Scholle IPN’s proprietary film technology, known as 2Pure™, which contains scavenging technology that protects the taste of the packaged water.

Flexible plastic consumer product packaging, including multi-layer films, helps preserve food quality and freshness, but is harder to recycle and is not accepted in curbside programs, acknowledges Keith Dailey, Kroger’s group VP of corporate affairs and chief sustainability officer. “Kroger recognizes the negative impact packaging — including plastic waste — can have on the environment,” he says.

Available on iPhone and iPad (iOS) devices, the PolyApp allows users to prepare orders and perform dimensional calculations for the specific product (rolls or boxed) being designed, manufactured, quoted, or purchased.

Calculations are all made within a matter of seconds after the specifications are entered, Polykar said.

App tools include: liner dimension, weight/1,000, film thickness, order planning, yield (roll OD and footage), and blow-up ratio.

According to the company, the flexible packaging industry is focused on addressing end-of-life issues, such as recyclability and composability. The adhesive holds the entire structure together and, to make the whole package compostable, the adhesive must also be compostable.

The new Flextra Evolution SF1000CP/XR2000CP is a 2K solventless adhesive that offers excellent design benefits, such as sound-dampening and adhesion to a variety of biodegradable film substrates from bar wrap to snack packaging.

With the problem of plastic waste receiving significant attention, demand for more eco-friendly packaging continues to increase, and companies around the world are taking various measures focused on targets for better circulation of plastic resources used for packaging and containers.

In one example, Toppan Printing has successfully collaborated with Unilever Japan on quality tests resulting in the adoption of mono-material flexible packaging for “Lux Luminique Sachet Set Limited Design,” which is due to go on sale in Japan starting in April.
