MILAN (9 January 2024) - Berlin Packaging, the world's largest Hybrid Packaging Supplier®, announced today the acquisition of Alpack Limited, a family-owned food packaging supplier located in Dublin, Ireland.
Founded in 1988 by Tony Lord, Alpack is now owned and operated by his son, Peter Lord.  Alpack supplies a wide range of food packaging products, including glass bottles and jars, twist-off caps, cardboard boxes, and eco-friendly containers.

Sainsbury’s swaps mushroom punnets from plastic to cardboard

Sainsbury’s has switched its own-brand mushroom punnets from plastic to cardboard, in a move which will save over 775 tonnes of plastic, equivalent to 52 million pieces of plastic a year.

The swap marks the retailer’s biggest single plastics removal in its history – equivalent to the weight of 43 full London double-decker buses.

The change will be rolled out to all 13 own-brand lines including whole baby button, closed cup, organic and chestnut mushrooms by the end of the month.

Aptar Closures introduces recyclable flow control dispensers for food & beverage

True to its name, SimpliCycle provides ease and function by streamlining mechanical recycling. Comprised of low-density thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), the valves float during the recycling sorting process, separating them from the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) stream; from there, they are recycled in the polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) stream. When assembled into a compatible Aptar closure, SimpliCycle creates a fully recyclable solution for use with PET, PE or PP containers.

SÜDPACK expands its involvement in CARBOLIQ

With effect from January 2, 2024, SÜDPACK has acquired additional shares of CARBOLIQ GmbH and appointed Dirk Hardow as Managing Director. By doing so, SÜDPACK is demonstrating its commitment to a closed-loop system for plastics and to chemical recycling as a complementary recycling technology. Dirk Hardow, who as Manager of the BU FF&C is responsible for matters such as the development and implementation of closed-loop models, will lead the company as its managing director in the future.

Bacardi unveils “world’s first” hydrogen energy-fuelled glass spirits bottle

The trial, which took place earlier this month, saw Bacardi partnering with premium glass maker Hrastnik1860 to innovate technology for a glass furnace powered with hydrogen as its main energy source. This initiative reduces GHG emissions associated with traditional glass bottle production.

Bacardi used the St-Germain elderflower liqueur bottle design for the trial, maintaining an identical appearance to the bottle produced through traditional methods.
