As companies work to improve their packaging sustainability, circularity — recyclable, reusable — is often where they put their efforts now. While many of the eco-advancements happen in the public eye with consumer products, the business-to-business (B2B) supply chain offers another area of significant contribution.

Here’s a great example: the latest packaging redesign by Nokia for its Fixed Networks Lightspan portfolio for its customer Deutsche Telekom.

The new center features state-of-the-art extrusion and finishing technology, coupled with advanced quality measurement systems and testing equipment. It will significantly increase packaging processability in serial production, system validation and capacity for future digital technologies.

The new packaging solution has been created by DS Smith designers to contain less materials and minimise waste. Key features include a locking system that is designed to prevent the chocolate boxes from being opened before use. The chocolate boxes are easy to assemble and fitted with a corrugated cardboard carry handle for additional versatility and usability.

It said recent research showed UK consumers splurged a £415m on Easter eggs in 2023, with an estimated 3,000 tonnes of Easter egg chocolate wasted each year in the UK, with packaging alone accounting for over 8,000 tonnes of waste annually.

Last year an estimated 4,370 tonnes of card and 160 tonnes of foil packaging were used for Easter eggs.

Despite efforts to promote sustainability, 59% of UK adults believe that Easter packaging remains excessive.

Mondi has significantly reduced waste in its release liner production through strategic partnerships.

At its facilities in Jülich, Germany, and Heerlen, Netherlands, Mondi has achieved a 95% waste reduction rate in just two years.
