Mondi has significantly reduced waste in its release liner production through strategic partnerships.

At its facilities in Jülich, Germany, and Heerlen, Netherlands, Mondi has achieved a 95% waste reduction rate in just two years.

Collaborative approach key to success

Mondi partnered with various stakeholders along the value chain to tackle the challenge of siliconised and coated paper waste generated at its release liner plants.

This waste is now repurposed and used as secondary raw material in several applications.

Partnership examples

Veyzle and WEPA: Mondi collaborates with Veyzle, a Dutch recycling specialist, and WEPA, a sustainable hygiene paper manufacturer.

Veyzle collects and processes Mondi’s waste while WEPA utilises its advanced technology to repurpose the material for hygiene products such as toilet paper and paper towels.

This partnership is geographically efficient, minimising transportation needs.

Soprema: Mondi also works with Soprema, a supplier of insulation materials. Soprema uses Mondi’s waste to manufacture cellulose wadding, an insulating material that enhances building energy efficiency.

This collaboration avoids waste and aligns with Soprema’s sustainability goals.

Commitment to circularity

This initiative demonstrates Mondi’s commitment to circularity and its efforts to minimise environmental impact throughout the value chain.

“At Mondi, we view waste as a loss in resources and have committed to eliminate waste from our production processes through our MAP2030 agenda. In this project, we aimed at using the production waste more effectively by valorising it as secondary raw materials in other applications,” said Carlos Martinez Ezquerra, Mondi’s circular economy manager for Flexible Packaging, in a statement.

“We are very proud of the 95% reduction we achieved at both locations and now look forward to working with CELAB, the leading industry initiative for the self-adhesive label value chain, and building relationships with other partners to further improve the circular flow of materials also in our other release liner locations across Europe.”
