Metsä Board Introduces QR Code with Recycling Information For All Its Delivery Packaging Materials

Metsä Board has introduced QR codes on the pallet and reel labels of its products for all volumes delivered to its customers. The QR code directs customers to an intuitive app that provides detailed information on the various packaging materials used to protect the paperboard during the logistics chain. This information will assist customers in determining how each component of the delivery’s packaging should be recycled.

Lignin Industries collaborates with Hellyar Plastics to scale bio-based packaging

After five years of R&D, Lignin Industries has developed Renol, a patented bio-based material developed from lignin. The process is to incorporate lignin into recyclable bio-based plastic, creating a sustainable alternative to conventional materials. 

Christopher Carrick, founder and CTO at Lignin Industries, tells Packaging Insights: “Customers across a number of sectors and geographies will be able to trial the integration of Renol into their products before conducting full-scale market launches.”

A Paper-Aluminum Combo for Strong, Sustainable Packaging

Takeout containers get your favorite noodles from the restaurant to your dining table (or couch) without incident, but they are nearly impossible to recycle if they are made from foil-lined plastics. Research published in ACS Omega suggests that replacing the plastic layer with paper could create a more sustainable packaging material. The researchers used mechanical demonstrations and computer simulations to identify paper-aluminum laminate designs that won’t compromise on performance.

Aarhus marks first year anniversary of its successful reuse pilot with TOMRA Reuse

On January 17, 2024, TOMRA and Aarhus, Denmark embarked on a journey together to pilot a city-scale platform for reusable takeaway packaging, starting with coffee cups and glasses. The three-year pilot project set out to establish a proof-of-concept that could demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of a city shifting from single-use to reusable takeaway packaging – and what would be needed to develop this further on a larger scale.
