Smart Planet launches new bio recyclable barrier coating for paper cups

This development incorporates polylactic acid (PLA), a biobased resin, with a specialised mineral blend, to produce a barrier coating which the company said offers compostability and recyclability for paper cups and other barrier-coated paper packaging.

Smart Planet Technologies insists that by mineralising the resin used in the extrusion-coating process, EarthCoating has ‘been proven’ to produce barrier paper packaging that is compatible with conventional paper recycling systems and qualified for recycling in premium recovered paper categories.

A green alternative: Grass paper packaging

It is sustainable, eco-friendly and trendy: Grass is increasingly becoming a valuable material resource and raw material for cardboard packaging and other paper, solid cardboard and corrugated cardboard products. Some of the groundwood pulp in the cardboard structure is replaced by processed grass fibres. Cardboard made from grass waste from compensation areas and nature reserves is particularly attractive.

PackUK - the scheme administrator for Packaging Extended Producer Responsibility - will formally launch on 21 January 2025. PackUK will implement the UK’s new Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging (pEPR) programme. The EPR Statutory Instrument came into force on 1 January and the establishment of PackUK as the scheme administrator is a key part.

Carmine’s, the Italian restaurant in New York City, US, is enhancing its customer experience by partnering with Consumer Convenience Technologies (CCT), a packaging solutions provider, to introduce the EEASY Lid for its signature sauces.

The collaboration with CCT will enhance the accessibility of Carmine’s sauces for its customers.

Carmine’s has been selling its signature sauces since the Covid-19 pandemic to support its employees, and due to high demand, has continued distribution.

Sonichem’s ambition is to reduce the reliance on petrochemical-derived ingredients in industries such as packaging, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Using its patented ultrasound technology to break down forestry co-products – including woodchips and sawdust – the company extracts natural compounds that can be transformed into ‘green’ alternatives to essential chemicals.
