Made from FSC-certified paper, the pots feature a single layer of plastic film which acts as a protective barrier when water is added, The Grocer reported.

The pots can be recycled at home while sauce sachets can be recycled at soft plastic collection points.

The paper packaging, which has been in development by Pot Noodle owner Unilever for three years, will remain the same shape at the original plastic pots.

If the trial is successful, the consumer goods giant looks to roll out the change to the entire Pot Noodle range.

Over the past several years, scientists around the world have found that plastics break down into tiny particles that contaminate the environment. Microplastics have been found in plants and in the bodies of animals and humans. In this new effort, the researchers noticed that many baby foods are now packaged in small, plastic pouches that can be conveniently heated in a microwave oven. Some are even marketed as organic, implying that they are healthier than other foods. The team members explored what happens to the plastic when it is heated in a microwave.

Milestones under the strategy for 2030 include that 60% of plastic containers and packaging should be reused or recycled, and that the recycling of plastic resources should be doubled. With 2025 as an important starting point toward those milestones, it will be essential to expand efforts for reuse and recycling on the way to 2030.
