Paper Packaging

Heinz is switching to a paperboard sleeve for multipack canned products. The new “eco-sleeve” is fully recyclable and is approved by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). The new sleeve also uses 50% less material than a fully enclosed box and 10% less than traditional paperboard sleeves.

Heinz estimates that a rollout across all canned products and major UK retailers will remove 550 tonnes of shrink-wrap packaging. The first products – a selection of Heinz Soups – are available in the new packaging, with a UK-wide launch to commence in Autumn 2021.

The new laminate is considered to be “one-sided”, which the company reports has been requested by many brand owners and retailers. The product is based on stretchable and printable paper-based laminates that can be shaped, twisted and embossed.

Up until now, FreeForm Packaging has only been able to offer laminates with polythene on both sides to ensure good sealing properties, but this has now changed.

The multi-layer laminate consists of three basic components: BillerudKorsnäs` paper ConFlex® Silk, a sealing layer made of BASF's certified home compostable and partly bio-based biopolymer ecovio® and BASF's water-based adhesive Epotal® Eco 3675 X. All components are certified home-compostable according to official European certification schemes for home-composting. The laminate contains a high share of renewables and extends the end-of-life options for multi-layer flexible packaging by being organically recyclable.

The German family-owned company says that it hopes the practical test will provide new insights into how paper packaging performs during automatic packing, transport and, ultimately, on the shelf. The packaging material complies with that of the prototype but has a somewhat heavier grammage which makes it more robust – one conclusion which could be deduced after the initial test in January.

KVIC is specifically using handmade paper envelopes/packets and handmade carton boxes for packaging of articles except for liquid materials where plastic wraps are nominally used to prevent any leakage during transportation. KVIC, which was using plastic for packing face masks for better hygiene, has also specially designed handmade paper envelopes made of banana fiber which it will start very soon.
