Say cheese! Mondi and Skånemejerier partner to introduce mono-material plastic packaging

The new packaging comprises a mono-material base web and lidding film, all of which is produced and printed by Mondi before being converted for 1kg and 2kg blocks of cheese by Skånemejerier. It will be sold in leading Swedish supermarket ICA and now comes in packaging that is designed for recycling.

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has made a strategic investment of €1.5 million in its CelluloseFilms pilot facility, a pivotal move towards addressing the sustainability challenges posed by one of the most ubiquitous plastics used in the food industry. This facility is geared to scale up production methods for renewable cellulose alternatives designed to replace traditional plastic film in food packaging.

The launch is a key focus of Hero’s ongoing sustainability strategy, as the company strives to build a better environment to meet the needs of tomorrow. Consumers can now purchase Cassis juices in one of the most sustainable packaging solutions – SIG carton packs with SIG Terra Forest-based polymers packaging material, which has a carbon footprint up to 51% lower than a standard SIG pack*. Fully recyclable, consumers can easily fold the pack flat and dispose with the cap in the appropriate PMD bin or bag.

Together with its partners, Greiner Packaging is taking yet another step towards a circular economy: In future, Rauch brand beverages will also be presented in supermarkets in trays made of 70% PCR (post-consumer recycled) r-PET material.

- In addition to bottles made from 100% r-PET, Rauch now also uses trays made from 70% recycled PET

- Tray-to-tray recycling reduces dependence on the PET bottle flow

- Waste from yellow bags is used as the basis for recycled trays
